Default is anyone else really irritated by Bear Grylls?

Theres something about him that really annoys me.
He's always at pains to stress the extreme situation he's in. Be it in an ice cravass, in the middle of a desert or on crocadile infested mud flats.

However, its not too dangerous for an entire film crew to follow him every step of the way is it?

As well as that, all the really dangerous stuff he does, there is always a camera crew at the receiving end of it. Jumping down into an ice cravass with a knotted rope to arrest your fall is a perfect example. If its that bloody dangerous (as he's making out) how come the film crew is down there as he falls in?

Even worse than that is when he's on the mud flats. he's making out like he's in serious trouble, but the camera crew are about a yard away from him and they're doing just fine!

in short, the only conclusion I can draw is that the situations Bear Grylls puts himself in are about as dangerous as the situations the presenters of Playbus find themselves in.
Discuss.

Oldspice, the bear bit is, thats his real surname, the son of a former MP.

As for him and his tv show, oh dear is all I will say. The outdoor community have really sank their teeth into him for these.

Anyone who's climbed Everest and been a member of the SAS is ok by me.
His show is becoming repetitive though, the one he did on the French Foreign Legion was much better.

Foreign legion show was pretty good however Bear 'stays in luxury hotels' Grylls other programmes are not only poor but also misrepresenting reality.

The only reason I haver ever watched one of his shows is so I can spend a few minutes pitying the wannabe lord of the jungle.
The only promotion that guy is doing is for his own ego, not the great outdoors, before he swans off back to his 5* hotel for the night...
I reckon his real name is Ethel Fudgepacker or something

Harsh, I reckon he's more of an adventurer than anyone here will ever be. He's just not stupid and prefers 'surviving' in 5 star luxury.

Maybe he should be teaching hotel survival on his programs as well? How to steal towels/robes, rob the minibar, free **** on the telly, get a room upgrade etc.

he broke his back before climbing everest, parachute jump went wrong, hence left the army, his shows have been shown to be faked, hence now if u listen to his commentary, he quietly adds, this item was brought with me, or this boat was placed here earlier. he can climb though, not only mountains, but is good on rock, taught by his father, tv is just entertainment, am sure away from this his skills outdoors are very good.
anyone here ever ice climbed for real?
crew obviously lowered into the crevace first, your job to imagine being in the crevace without one.
try watching touching the void. that will really put crevasses and climbing into perspective.
saying all that cant stand his program, my mate thinks its great.

Reading the thread title got me so wound up, I set about smashing up the Discovery channel on my Sky box.

Suppose that means I find him mildly irritating.

1st off without a camera crew there would be no show. Dont know how anyone can complain about that

I find it very entertaining being an ex forces man myself, the show is very informative and each time i learn something new.

Situations we might find ourselves in 1 day, ie how to get out of quicksand or a mud filled pit. Most of us would just struggle and go deeper down into it. Millions of us hillwalk, might trip over and break an ankle, break a leg etc and then be stranded up there overnight. Im sure a lot of people go skiing, what about situations you might find yourself in if you get caught in an avalanche etc, extreme changes in weather conditions.

Like someone else has said, ex SAS and someone who has experienced Everest gets my vote

So what if he sleeps in a hotel now and again, someone that soaks himself in his own **** and squeezes water out of a lump of sh*t for a drink tells you its not all 5* hotel material.

Good informative tv for a change

Its not so much about the camera crew being there, its the fact there 3 feet away from him when he's in a "perilous" situation. My point being if he's in river getting sucked down by quicksand and its that bloody dangerous, they should be on the bankside with a telephoto lens and not out there with him on the flats!

Well I enjoy it. I get completely roped in by the whole thing, edge of my seat stuff.

I know it's not real but I don't get worked up by it, I just immerse myself, like you kinda have to do with star wars and stuff....unless you believe in all of that.

Makes me laugh, I watched last weeks show, it was so obvious hes trawling through the Amazon with a tribe leader or someone similar who was showing him what to do etc. Trying to catch Phiranas with a bow and arrow, couldnt do it then when he does catch them, the end of the arrow wasnt in sight, like someone else caught it left it on the arrow as the camera crew took a shot of him firing it. Comical, couldnt even make a fire so stuffed straw down his top to stay warm. Made a ladder that fell apart when put to the test. The guy is a clown.

Same day I watched Ray Mears, now I know this guy knows his stuff BUT, he says, the people stranded would only have thier survival kit to get by with, theyre all trying to make a little sleeping hut and Ray walks over and says thats not going to work (indicating to the axe they were using) pulls out a knife and completes the job with that. Well theyre bolloxed then if they cant use their survival kit

p.s. Its proven before that Bear Grylls pretends hes in these extreme conditions but had actually been going to a comfy hotel during each nights stop over

This faking it in TV is nothing new. I remember when I was about 10 years old, we were on a canal boating holiday up in Manchester and met a couple on another narrowboat. They were taking this boat all around the country for the TV series 'Go With Noakes'. John Noakes was supposed to be boating around the country with Shep but in fact what was actually happening was John Noakes was staying in various hotels and getting the train or being driven to the boat each time they wanted to do some filming. Shep was actually one of three identical dogs who arrived by car with their trainer.

My illusions were shattered and I've since learned that nothing in TV is what it seems.
