Question How can refugee g.friend avoid debt register

Ok girlfriend of a year is pretty distraught .
Shes zimbabwean and has been here for about 5 years ( 2 years before that as a student) .Left journalism job major network cos someone high up she'd never met/known phoned her up one day suggesting how she might alter her stories - hence the course here. Anyway she was offered refugee status sebsequently but didnt take it at the time - she was doing ok fending for herself and took out a 10k loan to pay for her sisters drugs ( unfortuntely she died anyway from the major killer ).

Now , and quite possibly cos situ back home could go on for some time yet , shes decided to take that refugee status and consequently according to the rules she cannot work. She has never had any major debts here afaik and has struggled to look after herself and some family back home But she has always kept up this loan until she simply cannot now.

When she informed Barclays of her situation they agreed to put her on a plan of £10 a week ( the robbing f**kers have already had the 7 k worth of interest out of her leaving ~10k more to return to them after 4 years ) . Since then shes had a letter demanding the whole remainder in one sum within a month !
This was when she went to CAB , who told her to offer them a £1 amonth and yes she would probably have to go some sort of debt register ,just unavoidable dear and that they would write a letter to her bank.
Well im not at all sure of whos spoken to who but now she gets another letter off the bank asking for just over a grands worth .. of interst presumably -ignoring all previous correspondence .

She also took compulsory ?? insurance with the loan cos she might become unemployed /die and beginning of last year went into the bank asking for the forms for claiming cos she wasnt workin - never arrived even after persistant nagging .

She has done everything by the book and doesnt want to now be on that register ,she may one day want a mortgage ( has several props back home ,worthless presently of course ) - surely if she isnt allowed to work the bank should show some clemency.

of course i could help her avoid the register and pay that grands worth but maybe theres another way ?

Just a question that might help those who know about these things - was the loan taken in Zimbabwe or the UK?

(From what your saying, it sounds like its unfortunately in the UK )

For what it matters, I wish her well.

I'm not the greatest expert but did work at Barclays for 12 years and my wife worked at the debt recovery units there in the 90's recession. Basically, put in writing to Barclays what you she is willing and able to pay . If the **** does hit the fan and they take it to court, the courts will look very dimly on Barclays not being willing to compromise. Try and get her to speak to a named person at the DRU (debt recovery unit) and record what was said. Most individuals there will be sympathetic but the organisation as a whole is sometimes misguided.

I'm guessing this is part of the major shakedown because of the economy...Barclays got badly burnt 15 years ago and they don't want it to happen again...

Good luck.

I hope you get it sorted and all works out for the best, but in the intrim can you not sort her out with th money, ok not the solution be a short term answer that would stop her getting any bad credit status plus stop the robbing bank from getting more and more money?
