12v microphones. where to buy?
Im trying buy a 12v powered microphone. I bought a small one from maplin but it seem to be overwhelmed by the exhaust note in my car and records lots of noise.
anyone know where i can buy a better one?

Rather than try different mics try moving the mic further away or if you can manually set the recording levels, really it should peak at -2db in video tape if you have that level of control. It is likely the autogain on the audio is to blame or partly to anyhow.
Question - does the mic have a battery or is it relying on the camera the supply the phantom power?
Move the mic first and repeat, try a few distances before condemming the mic.
If you want a good mic then be prepared to lay out £ 100.00 +

The mic is powered by the *** lighter in the car. Ive tried battery powered mics and the recorder wont pick up the sound from them.

how far away have your tried the mic in relation to the exhaust?
I would have thought some 5m would be about right, also try positioning the mic in different places, if the exhaust note sounds great next to the drivers door (as an example) then try it there.

I think we are about to establish that you do not have a very long lead
is does sound like a mic gain issue as much as positioning, can you manually adjust the mic input gain (recording level) at all???
