cant go wrong with Bakwell or Matlock, nice village/town some good roads and plenty of coutryside for walks if you like that kinda thing, also iirc theres a gullivers kingdom theme park round Matlock aswell could be good for the kids.

Make sure Gullivers Kingdom is open, we went there in the middle of September and it was shut! Seems as soon as the school holiday finished it was closed. And they wonder why people go abroad!

We went up the Heights of Abraham cable car which my 4 year old enjoyed.

Gullivers Kingdom isn't open until March unfortunately.

There is a stonking chippie in Matlock Bath, just as you enter the main pull through on the left hand side.

Personally I'd go a little further afield and head up to Castleton - the Blue John mines are great and Speedwell Cavern is good fun in the boat (wrap up warm and be prepared for a VERY long walk down (and up!)

Through Castleton, head up winnits pass (stop off at blue john cavern if necessary) T junction turn right, follow road down and round left hander, 50 metres after car part on right take right-hand hairpin slot.. ..then enjoy.
Turn left at T junction in Hope, 2 miles take right hand junction at lights towards Bradwell, stop off at chippy for lunch then repeat the above.

Gullivers Kingdom is a toilet anyway. So is Matlock Bath come to think of it, but it has been for decades.
