17 suicides involving kids.
I think it is incredibly sad but what the heck is going on?? How can things be that bad at that age and how come its happening there?

Well I live and work in Bridgend, and no its not that bad - its quite baffling really, and very sad.
I actually work in the FE College in Bridgend, so I see the 16/17 yr olds every day and 99% are, or appear to be fine.
Unfortunately its not a big place, so they all tend to know each other, so when something like this happens it seems to affect quite a few of them.
Press were all over the College a while ago, as some of the suicides are ex-college students. Its been blown out of proportion by the Press though, there is no suicide pact or anything like that.

Ditto StiX above. It's a pretty good place, like any Welsh town in the valleys it's suffered from the lose of big heavy industry and took a down turn for a while.
Valley folk are really friendly and have a fantastic community spirit, something lost in many areas around the UK. Being a Taff I would say that but I don't care.
As stated the Press are really blowing this out!

According to *official statistics* (quoted by the Beeb and at least one paper yesterday) about 15 kids per 100,000 people top themselves each year. Brigend, pop. 130,000, has had 16 in the last year so right in line. No idea why the media are making this out to be any bigger an issue that it is already.

Well it is hard to say but difficult to believe that all those suicides are just a coincidence. Of course you can prove whatever you like with statistics, but this still seems unusual to me.

No one can believe what is going on or why , I know 3 of the families involved , was talking to one of the fathers , a friend of mine the other week who's son killed himself christmas time , he had no idea at all anything like this would ever happen , the boy was in the house next door , who's is also a friend of mine , he was with his sons , went off shortly after waving , happy , to be found next morning in the park dead......
Being the father of a 20 and 21 year old it doesn't bare thinking about the hell hole they are in .
