Default Did you need to have your front fogs on this morning?

If so...

....WHY?

Seriously - If you had your front fogs on in daylight today, even though it was foggy, what benefit did you get from them - or think you got from them???

I can't believe that it makes any difference to the driver's ability to see through the fog or to the ability of other drivers to see the car (as, after all, your headlights are on as well). So - what's the reason???

Many many people use front fogs during the day, so they must do it for a reason (and let's keep this to when it's foggy - I don't want to even start the 'front fogs & sidelights' rant!). Rear fogs are more justifiable during daylight hours (unless another driver is directly behind you - in which case turn 'em off out of courtesy) but surely front fogs are only of any use in darkness....????

Can anyone help me here????

I had to have them on in the Saxo I'm using at the moment, because I have to have the front fogs on to have the rear light turned on. So hows about bollocks!

My Impreza doesn't even have any front fog lights, but if it did I'd drive around with them on all day - for the sole reason of annoying other Subaru drivers

More to the point - most people still don't know how to use them properly. But that aside, I would much rather that people used too many (or the wrong) lights in weather like we had this morning, than none at all. The number of people I saw driving around with no lights on beggared belief!

If a driver is directly behind me in fog.. I would stop get out and punch them, not turn off my fog lights !

As for front lights, if it annoys people it means they have seen me and Jobs done !

yeah because i was advised if visability is less than 100 yards to put them on when i was learning to drive! its either listen to my driving instructor and the HIGHWAY CODE or take advise from some loser off the internet! what would you do!
you clearly noticed that some cars had foglights on and in doing so you have just proved why they are a good idea! so you know the cars are there when its very dull and foggy!
did the mrs not put out this morning?

I put my fog lights on if its really foggy.

Other drivers can see you easier - it has nothing to do with your own visibilty

Bit like having the fog light on at the back

Isn't is illegal to use them under conditions of good visibilty, just like the rear fog lights.

Particularly bad this morning, on the golf I have to pull the front lights on to get to the rear light, so yes my front ones were on this morning.

As soon as another driver gets up behind me though they both go off.

Tbh I really dont see what your getting worked up about. The fog nr me was pretty thick with about 25m visibility.

Damn right I stuck my front and rear fogs on. Anything that gives someone else an extra chance to see me and vice versa is better in these circumstances.

If I hadnt seen so many of your other rational posts Id think you were a troll

I'd rather people said i looked like a t**t than have some plank smash into the front or back of me because i thought it bothered other drivers.

Fog was extremely thick in the town centre this morning and it was impossible to see buildings just to the side of the road. Both sets of fogs were on since people have a tendency to just pull out of junctions and I'd rather be seen than hit.
There were a strange number of silver cars who didn't bother with any type of lights which made it very hard for them to be seen!

I think the point being that most people don't realise that the whole reason you have front fogs is that they are set much lower on the car. If fog is really bad and the light is reflecting back at you, then use your front fogs and turn off your normal dipped beam. The only time I've really had to do this was when driving through very thick fog at night. During the day this rarely happens.

Well out here in the middle of nowhere, there was loads of freezing fog (-6). Too right I had all of my lights on.
No viewing assistance, as I've got HIDs, but it's more light for others to see tbh

I don't know why Subaru doesn't ditch the front fogs (used twice in 6 years of ownership) and provide driving lights instead ? Is it a legal requirement to have front fogs? Don't think so.

I was simply fuming when I got into the office this morning, as all of these plonkers were driving around with front & rear fogs on - driving down the M4 with half-mile visibility - and (a) I wished to vent, and (b) wished to know whether anyone had a good reason for having them on!

Agreed - if visibility is indeed down to 20m then I'd probably stick a blue flashing light on top of my car if I thought it'd make it easier for people to see me - so front & rear fogs at a minimum! However, when it's dense mist rather than strictly fog I can't see the point of using front fogs....

...which are low down and designed to cut under the fog (as it doesn't sit right on the ground, it 'hovers' above it) and improve visibility for the DRIVER instead of using headlights AT NIGHT.

It's generated some interesting posts from some people... and it's actually quite interesting to see some SN members, that I thought from some of THEIR other posts to be reasonable and intelligent, actually very vehemently defending their use of front fogs...

As you were...

Its not directly for your benefit to see more clearly in fog, but allows other road users to see you from a greater distance, therefore minimising the risk of an accident.

No, its not a legal requirement for the front set but it is for the rears. Mine doesn't have front fog lights but instead the apertures are used for brake cooling.
