Default The Thing - Sci Fi 10pm

Just thought I'd mention this is on tonight. One of the best horror films ever made and has kept its "fear factor" long after Alien has lost its edge with numerous sequels (although awesome in itself)

Before CGI made sci-fi horror cheap and "a bit ****" this stands out with excellent monster effects.

Hopefully the sequel/remake won't suck *****.

PS - anyone seen the South Park episode where they take off The Thing - funny as.

1980's, great music and great films. No doubt others will disagree, it is Scoobynet after all

Back to The Thing, if it is the one I am thinking of it is so horrible it is well worth another viewing

Excellent film, John Carpenter directs. Best scene IMO the head falling off and sprouting spiders legs...

Thumbs up

Superb horror/sci-fi from the master himself. The ending justy leaves you hanging and onew of the few remakes better (by far) than the original The Thing from Another World.

Check out The Fog as well - Carpenter is a genius.

The original was good but would the remake have been as good without the special effects (which would have been very hard in 1951)?
Unfortunately he went crazy and has not done a good movie since (not that i can remember) and the rumours of a new Thing movie and remake of Escape from New York just **** me off.

The special effects (such as they are) do not make the film, carpenter is the master of suspense. I do my best to put my critique of the special effects on hold and try to remember when they where made and keep budget in mind, especially on the older films and concentrate on the direction, acting and srtory oyherwise they would be pretty unwatchable in a lot of cases.

The original was supposed to be a shocker in its day and pretty much was i am sure

The remake is full of suspense and some gore but not too much and heavily mixed in with the suspense, i love the sequenbce when they are testing the blood samples, most of the suspects are tied together as the samples are checked and on then starts to change ans they hurridly try to seperate them, the effects are poor by todasys standards but the story, acting and suspense are spot on and make that scene (a lot like Alien and how that works from that POV) and even in the end you do not know if either of them are what they appear.

I do believe that neither the actors nor Carpenter knew who was the Thing (possible the ultimate in suspense ).

FANTASTIC, and why he (Carpenter) is the master

Kurt Russell played a blinder, one of his best performances, next to Snake Plisskin in New York of course

Ah, John Carpenter again.

Yep I agree its a classic

Along with Escape from NY and The Fog

Never bothered with Escape from LA, nor the remake of The Fog

Probably wont bother with the remakes of Escape or The Thing either

The original Alien is still as suspenseful as it was the day it was released, and to me has never aged one bit

The South Park episode is called Lice Capades

Cartman is Mac and they are doing the blood test scene to see who is infected with head lice

Why hasn't Carpenter made any good films since Escape and The Thing. Ghosts of Mars is the last one I can remember and its awful.

Escape from LA was ****e awful special effects, the remake of the Fog was ****e (the ending was just stupid imo) doesn't help with remakes when most people already know the story.
Not too sure if the Thing is a remake or a sequel

Quite like War of the Worlds - apart from the machines being here all the time, that was stupid.

The Thing isn't a remake, its a prequel. Its the story of the Norweigan base.

The new film will end up with a couple of Norwegians chasing a dog in a helicopter. Im guessing that one dies in a fireball and that the other is shot through the eye with a pistol.....

Well this is what I have wondered - how do they end it?

Its like, we know how it ends. I guess the lead bird will have her "F you too" moment and two other guys probably just go off chasing the dog.
