Yank to move across the pond... maybe...
So I've lived my whole life in California. Currently living in Los Angeles. It's ok here I guess but I'm kind of getting over it. My job is alright but pretty stressful right now. My company did recently make a deal with Aardman where I could POSSIBLY move to Bristol for a year or two. It got me thinking. Well the missus is gone. I don't have a lot of family in LA to speak of. If not now when? So then I started thinking I don't really need to wait for my company to set me off overseas. I could just go and start fresh.
So I'm curious. What's it like in England? Can I import my Scooby from the States? How do most Yanks like it there? Should I look at a particular city?
I've been a computer administrator for about 10+ years. I work in computer effects and animation right now. I like the business but I'm open to anything. I think I'm pretty alright at my job. I'm good with computers and people. Is there much need for that? What would my yearly income be like? How much is rent? Will I ever stop asking questions? Probably not!
Anyway I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Opinions?
cheers

Just wait til you see the petrol prices!
I reckon it's about $9.60 a gallon at the moment.
There are good and bad parts to Bristol, you really want to be around Clifton, for some nice old architecture and a pleasant cafe style culture (although some of the people there are painfully trendy)!

Tell you what, I'll do you a swap.
You can live in my house and I'll live in yours.
And I'll throw the missus in, too
The sooner I can get outa this hell-hole the better.

England in 2008 - it's not too far from the truth
Cynisim aside, there is some lovely countryside around Bristol with The Mendips and the Quantocks to the south, Wales and the Brecon Beacons to the West and the Cotswolds to the North East.
Bristol is also the home of one of England's infamous exports - Edward Teach aka Blackbeard.

Come on over and see it for yourself. There's good and there's bad. You'll figure out what you like and what you don't.
Bristol is a good start and as said above there is plenty of roads to screw the scooby along. I would'nt worry about importing a motor from the US. Buy a right hooker over here as you will be doing plenty of overtaking.
I once had a left hook BMW E30 which was aching to go down the cogs but got a little frustrating as i couldn't always see down the road to overtake.

There is a certain amount of "the grass is greener" here I think
Cost of living is high.
Crime is relatively low.
Gun crime (contrary to the beliefs of some) is almost non-exsistant.
The police are pretty chilled out compared to the US (!).
The schools are variable, some are great, some are ****.
As is the NHS, but private medical insurance IS affordable to most people.
The weather is very temperate - no real extremes of anything.
We get excited about scale 5 "earthquakes" and talk about how traumatic it was to see a picture fall off the wall (the stiff upper lip is dead in many parts of British society I'm afraid).
Contrary to the beliefs of many Americans I've encountered/worked with, we're very open minded/liberal in comparison to our dear American friends, and not very uptight at all. I still can't get over seeing a bunch of USMC's faces when they saw a copy of the Daily Sport for the first time...
We're naturally cynical about everything, and we usually follow that up with a good dose of sarcasm.
Our houses are little and close together; but they're made of Bricks. We paid attention to the three little pigs see....
There are exceptionally nice areas, and there are exceptionally bad ones - the same as anywhere.
Think that pretty much sums it up really.
Reference your Impreza - I wouldn't bother importing it to be honest, we have a far better selection of different Imprezas here than in the US - including any JDM spec car you could possibly want. I think you'd find it easier to sell it in the states and then buy another over here. The only thing that might put you off is running costs in the UK - Shell V-Power, which I think is fair to say most of us run our cars on, is currently around $2.30 a litre.

One of my staff is a lady from CA.
She has lived here for a few years now and loves it. Lives in an almost rural area outside Reading, so a few miles east of Bristol, plus she is not the main breadwinner (might have a bearing on your quality of life).
HTH.

You can almost see the doomsayers on Scoobynet who live in England rubbing their hands together with glee to type a piece rubbishing their own country. It's not half as bad as some people are saying here, it's like everywhere, it's got good and bad.
Try before you buy mate, take a few weeks over here and see if it's a place where you want to live. As for importing your Impreza, I'd forget about it. You'll find it a real PITA driving about on single carriageways in a left hooker. Besides there are piles and piles of cheap Imprezas here. Especially classics in full sti spec, something you probably wouldn't have in the states.

Do it, why not? If you don't like it go home.
I live in Germany, why?? why not?? The chance came up and I love it. Don't go through your life just getting by, try new things, spice it up a bit. You've nothing to lose trying if you ask me.
