I must admit that 100K is a nice little sum but not that great in the scheme of things. I think I'd have put a load towards the mortgage, saved some (holidays etc) and spent the rest on new (well, a couple of years old!) car etc + pressies for nearest and dearest. BUT the vast majority on myself/my family.

£100k isn't a great deal of money but nevertheless I get frustrated at these sorts of morons! I'd make £100k stretch ridiculously far and yet these muppets blow it in like 10 minutes on nothing!

Stupid thing is £100,000 could quite easily get £4000 interest per year if put in the right place.
That £4K should easily cover the average annual holiday

Exactly. Yes you have a mortgage but at least you have the money available rather than locked in your house. Better to use the interest generated rather than erode the capital.
If your mortgage is 6% and you generate 4% from the 100K then your mortgage costs you 2% plus you have 100K capital.

It could have paid for their council house or a large part of it giving them some equity.
Sad that they did not get any counseling or advice or of they did they did not take heed.
Never their responsibility in cases like this is it, pathetic they expect others to pick up the pieces.

As the mortgage isn't too onerus at the moment and I've still got a couple of years on the fixed rate with early redemption penalties I think I would consider sticking 40k worth of extension on the side of the house and invest the remainder for 3 or so years until I can use it to wipe out a chunk of mortgage.

Swings and roundabouts for other peoples priorities although I think we all agree they could have handled the money much better

I'd like to know what the **** jackos mate was doing watching GMTV?
The only acceptable reason for doing so is to crack one out over Penny Smith. And even she is rapidly approaching her sell-by date.

I saw them too, Pete.
Trouble is here is apart from them having no idea about money the 100K wasn't worth winning compared to what they lost in benefits, sad but true.
They were already approximately 12K in arrears with the council which they paid off immediately.
They invested 70K which isn't going to provide you much in interest revenue compared to the benefits they already received.
They received £300/Month interest on 70K, therefore without spending the capital too thus reducing the capital further and receiving less interest month on month, they were simply not going to manage.
Yes they spent a lot in a reckless fashion but it simply wasn't enough to allow them to come off benefits for long in reality.
The council are using the 10K/year example that they thought the couple should live off, so effectively saying the money should have lasted them 10 years before re-applying for benefits.

At a time when people's rather nasty little houses can be worth getting on for 1/2 million quid and some people seem to be spending close to 50 grand on getting married I personally think if people want to waste 100K on nothing then it shouldn't make any difference whatsoever on their entitlement to benefits.
Put simply it's not that much money.

They were on GMTV again this morning - with their solicitor!!
I missed them yesterday but OMG, the lack of intelligence was staggering.
He can't work because of a frozen shoulder. She can't work because of a "Bad hip"
They are now taking legal action against thier local council as they feel they are entitled to benefits. They say they've spent it all and the solicitor basically said either sue them for fraud or pay them benefits.
The sad thing is, technically they are entitled to benefits. They were before and they are now. The fact that they blew 100K doesn't come into it.
Think its time we took a stand against this - its really taking the pi55 now. You have these idiots and then the next news article is some equally stupid person has faked her daughters kidnap for a quick buck.
FFS what is wrong with people!!!

They are entitled to benefits full stop. There's nothing 'technical' about it.

Whats wrong
How about people who expect to get benefits and live comfortably off of them for as long as they want to whilst others have to work to pay for these. Now getting into second/third generations who expect to be able to sit back and get everything they need without lifting a finger
Shabby reality TV shows where the people who win are the big mouths, the one who **** everybody over and are generally cruddy and then become celebs and earn big money with no real effort, talent or abilities.
The likes of Pete Docherty who seem to get away with whatever they like
PC nanny state and everybody knowing their rights and not their responsibilities.
No real fitting punishments for criminals.
How's that for a start...
