Hi,

I am wanting a product like sms, that will go around all machines on the network and bring back the spec of the pc's and/or macs (if possible) if it just does pc's then that is fine.

Anyone know of any?

Intel Landesk?, although I believe it is quite a long procedure to set up depending on the size of your network

For macs, hmm, well, Apple System Profiler will gather the info, but won't collect it back to central location.

part of our MacAdministrator software does hardware auditing and will collect it back to central location, but to be honest it'd be overkill for a one off job, especially just for the hardware audit

Don't suppose you want any network administration and desktop secuirty software for your macs do you?

Cool

If you are implementing Active Directory you can just save money and just tie the machines down with group policies. Then you'll know which machines have what softare on, also stop users from installing other software

Write something in VB, I did similar to version check software on a load of machines, should be fairly simple.

Don't suppose you have ANAT or Macintosh Manager on the mac side of things? If so then you can use Network Assistant to get the hardware specs remotely from the macintosh machines.

There are a couple of good suggestions here already - mine included - but if you're still using 95 then I presume the PCs are past it anyway and won't be up to running XP.
Go and buy 50 new identical Dells or whatever and then there's no need for hardware inventory. btw dunno what your organisation is like but SMS would cost about as much as buying all new hardware.

Try Visual Audit Pro from a software house called VisionSoft.

If I recall it collects all m\c specs AND installed apps.

We looked at it for Y2K auditing, but never actually used it....did it manually instead.

sms is covered under our licensing, so that is no problem. However, our budget will not allow purchase of 50 odd new pcs, so that is why we gotta use what we got Unless of course you know companies willing to donate to a college!

I just wanted to see what else was around to do the job.

thank you for the suggestions.

I wrote something that'll do the job a while back

I can batch this to be run (PC only though) in a start up script and save the info to a file or email it to an address.

half an hours work, if that.

let me know.

product for mac and pc, good luck! As mentioned we produce a bit of software that can gather hardware and software for a mac. The IT Admins goal is the holy grail which is cross platform product, and there are not that many.

You might want to look at:

Unicenter TNG by computer associates

AssetCenter by Perrigrine systems (I think)

As I said, good luck at finding a cross platform solution, there are not many, and the audit stuff is really a sub-set of what the whole, usually complex and expensive, package does, they are usually full asset management and/or desktop support systems.
