Default Fridge gas

Whilst chipping away at the ice in my fridge/freezer I managed to pierce the roof of it and gas is blatently leaking from it. Obviously it now means the fridge is fekked and Im having to replace it but can anyone tell me if the gas from the fridge is dangerous? Its been leaking over night and Im still alive ok.

Dave, if its a relatively new fridge the chances are it will be R600a otherwise known as isobutane and in the quantities you're talking about i.e. < 80g it will have dispersed by now and given that its only flammable once combined with air in concentrations between 2-10% I think you'll live.

The alternative could be R134a, which although far nastier from an environmental perspective, again probably less than 150g so not that harmful.

Thanks FCD. Put my mind at rest as Ive had to leave the dog at home with it too. I can smell it around the house and had the back door open at all times when home.

Flightman, I drink at the pub, not at home

I did that last week.

I am now waiting in the house for Tesco Direct to bring me a new Freezer.

That's £170 that I now can't waste on something fun

hi i'm new to this and have come home about 3 hrs ago and all i can smell in my flat is a smell of really strong glue in the kitchen area??
i think it may be coming from the fridge as it is second hand and a bit old!
i have closed the kitchen door and the front room door so the smell is semi contained.
the fridge is still working and on.
do you think i have something to worry about what do you suggest?

If it is the fridge that is leaking gas, the inside of the fridge will soon warm up!

Open all your windows to get rid of the gas and everything will be fine.

Are you sure it's not a natural gas leak from a cooker or boiler? That would be a concern! Natural gas has an odouriser called mercaptan added that smells like rotten eggs and it takes only a few parts per million of mercaptan to give natural gas a smell.

Funny thing but I did the same thing a little while ago and got a big faceful too. Was not smelly gas and did not affect me at least. Does tend to mean a new fridge of course.

If it was a while ago then it was probably Du Pont's Freon that hit you in the face....tasteless, odourless but a few more feet added to the hole in the ozone layer LOL

Global warming...let's bring it to Cumbria

Global warming? What's that Shaun? it's frekin freezing, still at least the rains stopped...... For now.

When I used to work on caravans, they used to stink of amonia when they burst? Will that be the same as a house hold freezers? We're talking late 80s early 90s vintage though.

Not for house hold use but big industrial chllers are going back to ammonia due to the sticter F Gas regulations.

If it was Freon, and I don't know, I was annoyed with myself for accidentally releasing it.

Incidentally surely the Ozone Layer and the hole which is now filling up again I am glad to say, has no connection with Global Warming. Some other person said it did once a while ago.

I do realise that the Freon can act as a greenhouse gas though. Mea Culpa!

I once had frostbite after disconnecting a union on a condensor unit that was supposed have had the gas reclaimed

Could have really injured me me...As I lost my balance and nearly fell off the ladder!

Thread resurrection, the Wife has done the same defrosting the freezer tonight. I can't see a puncture hole though, it's just making a lot more noise than normal so is it still fecked? Have emptied the freezer just in case but it looks like I will need to empty the fridge too?

Just about the worst time of year for having to fork out £200+ on a new fridge freezer too

Do you have accidental damage cover on your house insurance? Assuming the excess isn't too high, that might be worth a try.

If youve already salvaged the freezer stuff the fridge stuff might last a few days but youre gonna be running it on Max usage.

Actually saw this thread and thought someone hacked me lol

Got another fridge freezer in my study (handy for beers) so that is now the main one until I can get a new one for the kitchen. However as it's inbuilt that is easier said than done, they cost a bloody fortune and then have to find one that's the same size as the one I have so the cupboard doors can be fitted to it etc. Looks like you need a degree in engineering to take the old one out and fit the new one

Also thinking instead of rushing out to buy a new one I should wait until Boxing Day sales start and see what's available.
