My dog died today.
As some of you may have been aware, my beloved boxer dog Ben has been poorly for the last week or so.
At first they thought it was a tumor in his abdomen as it was filling with fluid, but an ultrasound at the beginning of this week disproved that. Then they said they thought it was right sided heart failure and gave him some heart pills to help. These gave him some nasty side effects, and this morning we took him back to the vets for advice.
Ben was put to sleep at lunchtime today, as it was decided that he had deteriorated further, and that he could have had a major heart arrithymia at any point which probably would have been a slow painful way to go, so we took the decision to send him off for a nice sleep.
I am absolutely heartbroken, but know that he is not feeling poorly or in any pain. We took the decision which at the end of the day was in the best interests of my baby boy.
RIP sweetheart.

Sorry to hear that: horrible when they go, but you did the right thing by your friend and that's all that matters.
Unfortunately, you can't keep them forever and, in the end, all you can do is be proud that you gave them a good home, grateful for the time you knew them and happy for goodness that they brought out of you.
Much as it hurts at the moment, you will feel better and then just remember the good times, that's what Ben would have wanted.
Hope you're soon on the road to recovery.

Awww Anna, I'm so sorry to hear that, you must feel dreadful
I know what it's like as I've been through it too with my last dog, the only thing I can say is that time does certainly heal and you will eventually get to a point when you can remember Ben fondly without feeling upset. For the time being just allow yourself to grieve and take comfort in the knowledge that you did the right thing to save him suffering any more than was necessary.

So sorry to hear your bad news. You don't want to hear this right now but it really does get better in time. They really are part of the family aren't they!
I had to have a week off work when my last pet died i was that devastated. You've done the best thing for him and it really was a selfless thing to do.
Thinking of ya chick x

It's an awful thing so try and keep your pecker up. I'm old enough to have lost 3 dogs and it's painful.
But those who say it gets better are right. It does.
It's odd little things that spook you like finding a piccy you didn't know you had and things like that.
So all the best to you. d

LG as a Boxer owner myself and have had to have one put to sleep I feel your pain mate, my first Boxer Holly was my baby and I will always tresure the happy memories she gave me, she was white which made her more special to me, we now have Ellie another Boxer, who though will never in my mind be as good as Holly she stilll is my baby, I said I would never get another dog but my eldest son just kept on, come on Dad it's not the same, and he was right, I could not have the same breed of dog BUT could be so differant, go out anf get another mate, I have a puppy cage if you need it, R.I.P. Ben you were so special.
Cheers
Colin
P.S. I need a large drink after reading this as I have tears in my eyes

Thank you guys. Just found his fave foozball behind the sofa.. that set me off again, but I am focusing on the good memories - of which there are thousands, and the fact he where he has gone, he will no longer be deaf, or blind in one eye, and can eat as many gravy bones as he pleases without having to watch his waistline.
Scoob99 - our first boxer, Jessie was a whitie and whilst I loved her to pieces, Ben was my baby. He has been my constant companion through the last ****ty 4 years as I have been ill, and I will always remember his little ways of cheering me up... I told him to go find a special place that when I finally go I can 'catch up' with my snuggle monster.. he gave the bestest cuddles

So sorry to hear this.
You can look back and know you did your best for him and made his life full and didn't let the poor lad suffer in the end.
We lost our first boxer at the age of 7 months from aortic stenosis. One minute we were enjoying a walk with her and then she just dropped down dead.
To have a member of your family die is a hard time and our pets can often mean more to us than some of our relatives! That says a lot about how much of an impact they can have in our lives. It's now that all those times he chewed things he shouldn't have, wee'd in the house when he was a pup, made a fool of you in the park with his typical Boxer stuborness, his farting when you had visitors and his keeping you awake with the Boxer snore are all put to one side and you just remember how good a pal he was and how much fun and love he brought to your life.
My wife and I both feel for you.
And of course
Chyna
And Oz
Send big licks.
Paul.

I am so sorry to hear your news and I well know how you feel because its not long ago when we lost our cat who had been with us for 22 years.
We found the best thing was to take in another cat when we got over the first shock and unhappiness.
