Default Second hand cars not selling?

Keep hearing so many different stories. Two people I know with Boxters couldn't shift them. One sold for virtually pennies in the end.

I know its only one part of the market but I've heard similar from other people....the market is dead.

I know some will say its all down to price, which it is,but we are talking about people getting rogered.

Thought this would happen next year but not just yet

Sold my 350z for the asking price recently, had the call within a couple of hours of advertising it on PH. If its a good car and a good, honest, detailed ad then it will sell IMO. Similar story with all of my cars.

Some people selling are just lazy with their advertising and attention to detail on their vehicles. Nobody wants to buy a dirty, badly looked after car.

Just sold my BMW 330CI for quite a bit less than I hoped for, its a buyers market at the moment, fuel, road tax cost etc to blame imo.

Why when 1 or 2 "friends" do something, or in this case not do something (sell their cars) does it equate to the entire UK second hand car market failing, or is it just that you and the other SN doom mongers NEED to have a doom thread each week?

For balance, I just sold my 205 trackday car and it was about the most expensive for sale on PH and I sold for just under asking price, and it didn't take long to sell either.

Similarly I bought a Focus ST the other week, dealer had it in 4 days before I bought it.

So IMO and from my experience the market is fine.

Its down to the type of car;

Specialist/rare stuff is still pretty usual...nothing sells fast - lots of messer, but the people who want them are still there and the economy in terms of running costs has little impact on that as its weekend cars not intended for regular use.

But the broader market stuff; especially mass production cars and sporty-ish stuff intended for daily use have took a real knock. So anything petrol with iffy MPG just doesn't sell - especially if the market is flooded with them. Thats your big engined petrol BMWs to a tee (I'm not mocking; I have one ).

However, stuff will always sell if you offer it at a cheap enough price.....how cheap is down to what you can afford or bear to lose.

Yup, sold my wife's Golf recently on autotrader. A trader actually bought it to make a few quid.

There are times when it is an advantage to have a Mini Cooper.

THe best way to tell is ceck auction some prices cars are selling less than the cap clean price at auction and that tells you what you need to know. New minis thoguh are still going for silly money people seem to really want those cars.

I can think of two:

- parking in small spaces.
- pulling women who think they are cute.

Infact, I've never had a car no matter how new/fast/expensive/flash that got me more women than my Cooper!

Anything with a big engine and not much pedigree or interest value will struggle, anything still will sell as long as the price is right, you think you will never sell that 3.0 MV6 Omega but it ends up going as you never know why someone wants it, maybe for a home abroad, to convert to LPG, only does tiny milage, drifting, there is always a punter, people scour the ads for things that drop in value.

I reckon I will have taken quite a hit on my Saab, 9k in Oct last year, probably nearer six now, seven if I am lucky. So a double whammy there, thanks Gordon, Alastair, Speculators, Opec, Tanker Drivers, oh and me for buying it in the first place and not going for a Fabia VRS. Its now becoming a rather expensive path ornament, what with working from home and cycling, did 40 miles last week, 14 so far this week.

I just sold our 206 xsi with little difficulty......

Now seeling our Smart Roadster.......had a fair interest in only 3 days of being advertised.....

BUT got my BMW 530i to sell next (Im having a complete car clearout!), and in all honesty Im bracing myself for a bit of a poor price, asI dont think there is a huge demand for gaz guzzling 3 litre petrol cars.....someone will no doubt be getting a bargain!

You've hyped up the ad now, lets see it

I don't claim to be an expert by any means, but its hard to make a car stand out in a sea of similar offerings. Good luck with the sale

Realistically I reckon your price is going to have to come down by another grand as well if you want a quick sale.

Your car looks and sounds (the mechanical work) pretty good though despite those comments.

I was thinking of the little logos and the chocolate n'o brain stickers on it as well.

Certainly it is a compliment though, your car looks very clean for something so old and with so many miles. You've obviously looked after it. I drive a 911 BTW, modern Bentleys aren't my scene.

im gonna give her a wash tomorrow, as thats what us mere mortals do, wash our cars our selves. think il take the graphics off, see what she looks like naked again. at least its not a chavved up example, as you will agree.

I think the mileage scares alot of people off your car, choccy. Despite engine rebuild and new 'box.

An engine bay clean wouldn't go a miss. Mine used to alook a mess when I bought it, some degreaser and truck wash goes along way - it should look like this- MY97 and no laquer either! Some matt black on anything rusting and get rid of the blue stuff.

Front seats could de with a wet-vac. Other than that and the stickers, not much else. If you still have the stadards bit (low level spoiler, exhaust, etc) put them back on, and ebay the modded bits or sell them on here there's always demand for spoilers and exhausts.

And don't waffle in adverts. Keep it to one line bullet points
