Question for the stargazers
Ive just been looking out of the window, and can see a very clear sky with a nice full moon evident.
if you take the moon as being at 12oclock, there is a very bright star at about 10oclock visible. Its the only other star visible.
any ideas what this star / planet is.
I,m on the south coast btw looking s/e

that would be jupiter. it is moving thru capricorn into sagitarius. how i envy you your view of the scorpion. really nice constellation with loads to see in it. it doesn't rise high enough in belfast unfortunately. best i can get is the bottom of aquilla/scutum and the wild duck cluster (which is really beautiful btw). with a pair of 10x50 binos you could make out 4 of jupiter's moons. lidl were doing a pair of bresser binos (same optics as meade) for £14.99. great way of introducing yourself to some backyard astronomy.

I'll be back in Cyprus at the end of July and the skies are so clear with zero light pollution where we'll be.
Last year the Milky Way was very clear every night along with the International Space Station
(have a good telescope out there )

Go here:
Your Sky: View from Cities around the World
Pick somewhere close
Set the time to last night
Click "View horizon at this observing site."
pan till your pointing the way you were.
If you want an offline one that you can do any location at any point in time, get the demo of this one:
SkyMap Lite Download it, Try it, Buy it... | Published by Marinesoft

Could it be Sirius-the "dog" star.
I know it is a very bright star, my co pilot saw it when we were crossing over the Atlantic one night and he thought it was a UFO! He was fit to pull the ejection seat for a moment.
