Looking at doing one stop over in St Tropez this summer as part of the annual European road trip with a few mates (would be coming from Barcelona and heading to Nice, so St Tropez is a good place to stop over, and plus I've never been before).
Just been looking at hotels and its pretty pricey (as expected), however one option would be a hotel a few k's away and taxi into the centre for some night light in the evening.
Anyone been before? Is it worthwhile?! Decent nightlife?

I went a fair few years ago,and it was very expensive then.
It is worth a night out there although im sure your pockets will be a lot lighter in the morning.Nightlife was great,some very nice chilled out bars.
All the bars are on the waterfront,although down the backstreets there are more traditional resteraunts and places to have a booze.
BTW,we slept in the car outside some expensive looking apartments

I go to St. Tropez fairly regularly. The only thing I'd recommend is to take plenty of money ! I generally stay in Cavalaire sur Mer which is about a half hour drive away, but there are other nice towns nearby like Saint Maxime and Port Grimaud.

Went to St Tropez last summer. You're not wrong about it being pricey - the price of a salad and drink at one of the sea-front restaurants ![EEK!](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/eek.gif)
The passenger ferry from Sainte Maxime to St Tropez is a good way to see all the multi-million dollar yachts.

Like MJW, we stayed in Cavalaire sur Mer and drove into St Tropez and Monaco and as wrx300scooby said above, I too wasn't particularly impressed with St Tropez and preferred Monaco.
We did however find some interesting cars in the car park we'd parked in at St Tropez:

Yes the car park at St Tropez harbour has some great exotica there ; last time I was there there was a Porsche Carrera GT, an Enzo, old Aston Martins, etc. If you get there early enough for a coffee at the Red Cafe, you can watch all the hookers being slung off the yachts.

It is full of people who can't get a slot in Monaco. Most of the nightlife is on the boats. Other than that, it is full of pubs who expect that you will only drink something that costs the same price as a house (that'll be about 40 quid for a half 'un then
)
All the real money is in Monaco or Antibe - you still won't be able to afford to go out on the lash, but the boats and cars you can dribble on make it more worthwhile.
Call in and have a look at the place, so you can say been there done that, but there is really nothing worth staying for

Personally I think the whole region is over priced and too busy. If you are mega rich and want a place near by to moor your yacht fine otherwise I don't get it.
There are far nicer and cheaper places to go in the world where the people aren't all posing
