Sky+ HD Upgrade
Just bought a new Plasma TV and fancy upgrading from Sky+ to Sky HD. I see the price is £150 for the box if you take their HD package at £10 a month (box £399 if you dont). Has anyone recently upgraded and haggled to get it cheaper?
Am I right in believing that if I have Sky+ already then as I have a quad LNB I dont need any other work doing other than a box swap? As I saw on sky.com that they charge a £60 standard installation charge - no way I am paying £60 for some bloke to come and swap a box around. They can post me the damn thing

You won't get it cheaper being an existing customer, (they have NO customer loyalty ethics), from what I've read and heard you would be lucky to get away without paying the £60 install also !, you might want to wait a couple of months though as the troublesome Thomson HD boxes are now out of their 2 year exclusivity deal and there will be a Samsung and Pace offering (both reputed to be much better).
Your Quad LMB is fine, no change required.
p.s. I have Sky+ and am waiting for the new boxes.

From reading AV Forums it seems they have a high failure rate. Ok if your in your 1yr warranty period but pricey if not.
Im in no rush. Although my best mate works for Sky in Isleworth - hes a contractor but been there 3 years now and he got some staff deal for HD where he pays peanuts for it so will see what he can wangle for me.

About a year ago. I didn't have to pay any install fee.
To be fair the Thomspon box has been fine for me, it has thrown the odd wobbly very occasionally (turned itself off once), but by and large it has been far more reliable than omy old Sky+ Box.

It dropped to £150 on the 1st for existing customers. I have also heard they want the £60 to swap the box???
If you want HD that much its still cheaper to buy the HD box ebay and then flog the Sky+ box on Ebay. + boxes are about £70 and the HD boxes about £150.
No warranty though. Didn't know new boxes were coming out. Might wait for them to come out. Not fussed on HD until the F1 starts on BBC.

Youd be nuts to buy one without a warranty imho. I might be tempted to sell old sky + box but it makes sense to keep a backup in the loft or for multiroom.

True, I'd prefer a warranty.
Might ring them and see if I can get the box free if I take multiroom, HD, broadband and Sky talk. If theres no deal to be done I'll wait.

I simply went to an independent retailer and bought the box, swapped it myself. I even got a free quad LNB as a spare. Saved me £40, as the box was a bit more expensive, but no installation charges. Had no problems getting it activated.
