Where's my £1 ??
3 MEN GO INTO A HOTEL. THE MAN BEHIND THE DESK SAID THE ROOM IS £30.00 SO
EACH MAN PAID £10.00 AND WENT TO THE ROOM.
A WHILE LATER THE MAN BEHIND THE DESK REALIZED THE ROOM WAS ONLY £25.00
SO HE SENT THE BELLBOY TO THE 3 GUYS' ROOM WITH £5.00
ON THE WAY THE BELLBOY COULDN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO SPLIT £5.00 EVENLY
BETWEEN 3 MEN, SO HE GAVE EACH MAN A £1.00 AND KEPT THE OTHER £2.00 FOR
HIMSELF.
THIS MEANT THAT THE 3 MEN EACH PAID £9.00 FOR THE ROOM, WHICH IS A TOTAL
OF £27.00, ADD THE £2.00 THAT THE BELLBOY KEPT = £29.00
WHERE IS THE OTHER POUND?
EACH MAN PAID £10.00 AND WENT TO THE ROOM.

Yes, but the guests paid £9 each for the room = £27, the bellboy kept £2, that means £29 is accounted for ......... there is £1 missing! But everyone is happy!
I need to understand this trick, as if I can pull it off with 1 million people I can retire!

Good luck ... but of the £27 they spent on the room, £2 of it went to the tea-leaf... so it's not £27 + £2. It's £27 spent + £3 returned to the 'nice' boys! ...
... but i'm sure you already realise this!!

£9 * 3 = £27 for a £25 room, bellboy took the £2 difference between £25 and £27.
Anyway,

You are about to leave for holiday, but you forgot socks! You race back to your room, but all the lights are off, so you can't see the color of the socks.
Never mind, because you remember that in your drawer there are ten pairs of white socks, ten pairs of black socks, and eleven pairs of blue socks, but they are all mixed up.
How many of your socks do you need to take before you can be sure to have at last one matching pair?

they have paid £9 each for the room (although that is £2 to dear) although I imagine they would not have been told that the room was £25 as the bellboy is dishonest in keeping the £2 anyway. 3(10 - 1) = 27 - 2 (bellboys share) = £25
Out of guilt the bellboy probably made it a foursome, was reported in the News of the World and the hotel in question has now been closed down.
