We have done before to pop down the shops for something whilst a roast is cooking for example.
We wont ever again, the oven just caught fire when I turned it on and fek me I don't know what temperature it got to but the inside of the oven including the racks are now white/grey colour from burning
If that had happened while we were out we would have come back to a burnt down house.
It made a funny noise so looked in the over to see flames/sparks shooting out the back where the fan is and hastily shut the door again and hit all the switches to power it off
Luckily it all stopped on its own and has cooled down. Nice lot of smoke billowed out of it when I opened it after it was all switched off.
Having seen that happen on an AEG oven less than 2 years old I will never leave an oven on again whilst not in the house!
We have a fire blanket in the kitchen which would have been bu66er all use. Can you get fire extinguishers for home?

Glad you caught it in time....
B&Q and the type sell home fire extinguishers & fire blankets, but they only last for a few seconds and shouldn't be that relied upon!
Makes you think though!

Themostat probably goosed, so it overheated. Ours did that once...Christamas eve - Complete with Turkey ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
A Safety thermal fuse eventually blew, but after it had melted the plastic switches, cracked plastic handle and the charred sides on the ajoining cupboard units. I think it got a wee bit hotter than its rated 250degrees...probably well over 300degrees.
Luckily its kept pretty clean so not much grease could burn if it did reach auto-ignition temperatures (about 400 degrees IIRC).
Current oven has catalytic liners, so most of the grease gets burnt off (so long as its ran empty for an hour at 200+ ).
