Question Stolen and Recovered Cars

As some of you may be aware, I recently had my Audi RS4 stolen, and then recovered to me a few weeks later.

What I am now wondering is whether my car will forever be classified as "stolen and recovered"

I am hoping that as it was stolen and recovered to the "rightful owner", it won't be

Probably ?

I'd really like to know if it will always show up on a HPI check.

if the insurance didnt payout I believe you are ok. I think it only goes on the HPI, if they payout for the car and its later found.

can you refuse the car back based on this ? as obviously it will take a chunk out the resale price?

Ask your insurance company whether the 'stolen recovered' flag can be removed (if they did not pay out) As stated above it will have a huge effect on resale or part exchange value if it shows up on HPi / Experian checks. I'm in the motor trade and we would value a 'stolen recovered' car in the same way as a cat D write off ! (ie anywhere between 20 and 50% less than Glasses Guide trade price) We aren't interested in the circumstances, just that the HPi listing makes it harder to sell without a substantial reduction for the potential buyer.

it will not be recorded with hpi atall you are fine, even if they trashed the car and insurance repaired it for you it wouldnt be listed

as above if they paid you out on full for the car and you bought it back then yes it would be

No, if youve taken the car back and the insurance company has rectified the damage then it wont be recorded in any way.

The comment about 'the PNC' is misguided, but it does touch on another possibility (by mistake). The PNC has no bearing on commerical sales and HPI et al have no access to information markers recorded about vehicles there. It is possible that a V23 form has been completed by the police, but seeing that the vehicle has been recovered and not substantially damaged, then there is no reason why they should have. Its extremely rare for a V23 to be submitted by the police: theyre usually tuned in by the insurers after a total loss.

I once had a Nissan X-Trail in px, listed on HPi as stolen recovered. The car was taken with keys and recovered an hour later undamaged ! Because the theft had been reported to the police and insurance company it was flagged on HPi database. I actually managed to get the 'condition alert' flag removed because no claim or payout was ever made against the car. I still can't believe I managed it, usually a real nightmare !

Should only show on HPI as stolen recovered if your insurance company payed out in full. I got mine back in 48 hours, and it wasn't flagged on HPI

It just goes to show that the HPI recording / V23 / ABI category system is far from an exact science. Thats why it always makes me smile to see 'knowing' replies about what damage is implied by a certain category of recording. Its a lark and as the previous to one poster has pointed out: mistakes are frequently made and theyre seldom easily rectified.
