Birds Nesting in Gable End of House

I've just noticed some small birds have started to nest in the gable end of the house.
I'm not particulary bothered, other than the fact they are sh1tting all over the "canopy" of the lounge window.
What is the best way to get rid of them ?

Wait til they've gone, remove the nest and then put up some netting to stop them getting back.
We had some house martens build their mud nest in the apex of our gable, but after they went the nest fell down - bloody cowboy builders. Still going to think about putting up some netting to stop them coming back next year.
The other option of course is to feed them, and spike their food with Imodium
