Question Is This Correct?

Bought a FreeView Set-Top Box from Woolworths yesterday to replace an old busted unit, good price at £16!

Anyway, at the till they insisted on me giving my full name and address.

I got the Manager who said that it was a legal requirement and not just Woolworths policy .... I pushed her on this and she admitted that she wasn't actually 100% sure if it was a legal requirement.

Now, I understand that they (the authorities) may wish to check that I have a TV Licence ..... but I object STRONGLY to giving all my details in front of a queue of people!!

Is it a legal requirement or just a Woolies 'desire'?

Sounds a bit strange to me - why would they want that information? Doubtful it's for tv licencing purposes as you could have been buying the box for somebody else.

I bought a new vacuum cleaner in Curry's on saturday. It was £130 and it's got a years cover on it so they asked me if I wanted to extend cover for 5 years for about £35. I said no, then when I went to pay by cash, he asked for my name and address. When I asked why, he said it was the 1 years manufacturer's guarantee which is *****, I only need a receipt for that.

Anyway, I refused to give it and he got really stroppy, saying he couldn't complete the sale without it. I told him to stick it, left the vacuum cleaner on the counter, and walked out.

They're probably trying to get you on their mailing list or something. Could you imagine buying a nice plasma tv (without the extended guarantee) and then giving out your home address? Thank you, but no.

With identity theft and all that, I'm becoming increasingly suspicious about people wanting to know things about me.

They are obliged, yes. What really pissed me off was when someone in Cole Brothers (John Lewis Partnership) asked for my details for 'warranty purposes'. It was for an MPEG capture card which I bought as a present: ten days later I received an arsey letter from Capita on behalf of the TV licensing people..... Taking your details and recording them electronically under a false pretence is a serious matter, as the store manager agreed...

We don't send out arsey letters. We're all nice at Capita The only bad thing is where they shove the implants when you get assimilated....

(before you ask, I'm NOT involved in the BBC contract )

I've actually done very well out of my time at Capita - got good bosses who are more friends than managers. The Derby site people are great bunch to work with, and while the new job I do can be a slog (still learning) I actually do enjoy coming in!

Anyway - best not side track the OPs original point....

Coming back to an earlier point therefore - what if it's a present for someone else (or is it that a line they're used to hearing from licence evaders?)

Seriously though, I haven't bought a telly for a few years but I certainly wouldn't be happy giving my details out to a salesman.

There used to be a car hi-fi shop in Couldson near me (Car Sounds) and after an hi-fi install with alarm, they would come round to your house deactivate alarm and nick it all back. They were caught in the act after two suspicous customers got talking.

Thousand quid per offence, I'd be pushing for the details too if I was selling tellies.

The address you have to give is the installation address

I do some work for electrical retailers.

They record the name and address depening on the value of the purchase.

Anything less than £50 is just sold to a cash sale account.
They actively use the list for marketing purposes and repeat business.
i.e. product list of people who bought TV's x number of years ago.

They also use it for warranty though.

I may be missing something here but whats the big deal about giving your name and address anyway........... you can find anyone's name/address easily if you wanted to (for those worried about fraud etc).

Its a matter of principle of course-maybe you aren't used to that attitude though.

I can't understand SS Up why they want your details like that for what is in the first place "freeview" and secondly you can't use it without a TV set for which you have already had to give your name and address. If it is a legal requirement it is well over the top as far as I am concerned.

Hope your boat engine did not seize up!

pslewis is a God, you are quite right.

Sadly though, he has been banned from ScoobyNet forever.

And if you think that pslewis is the only person to get redress from Currys maybe you need to re-evaluate your mindset?

Hi Les

No it didn't seize up .... I took the boat about 1/2 mile out and it made it - and 1/2 mile back.

The tell-tale was still dry mind you!

Isn't the weather ****?? Only got out once, but came back to shore with a boat load of mackeral ..... gutted them there and then and had them bar-b-qued on the beach - can't get better or fresher than that!

Glad it was ok then SS Up. We have had either easterly winds or rotten weather anyway when the tides have been right for the Sea Bass, so I have missed out so far. Hope it all gets better soon anyway. I have no interest in being thrown all over the boat by the rough weather when I am trying to enjoy a bit of fishing. Might get better for the next lot of tides with luck.
