Just seen an advert for the samsung 32" LDC reduced to £400 (from £500)

Mate's got one..and if you really want an LCD then it's very good.

I'd rather spend my money on an HD Plasma though, better reaction time etc.

With Sony, theres a massive difference in their own range. I have what was the top of the range model, which shares the 40" LCD display with the entry level models. Even though 'its the same LCD' the difference is like chalk and cheese. Retailers cant be relied upon to tell you where it fits in the range (and would you expect someone in Sainsburys to know?), so its best to look on the manufacturers website and take it from there.....

To put this further into perspective: I have a big and very expensive (paid for by my insurers) TOTR Sony 40" LCD television. If I was spending my own money again then Id be looking at a Panasonic gas plasma set and whilst you may need to look at slightly larger (37" perhaps) kit in order to buy a plasma, itd be the better choice...

This is very true, most of the Sony stuff knocked out by Sainsbury's, Tesco's, etc. is the most basic U models. The vastly superior S and T models can be had from various Internet retailers for little more than what the supermarkets are selling the U versions for. Of course compared to other high street retailers prices the stuff in the supermarket does look very good value and of course you assume being from a manufacturer like SOny you are getting the best. This is not so!

I just bought a 26" Bravia job for our bedroom, I'd seen the KDL-26U3000 for around £300 in the supermarket but after a little bit of hunting around got the KDL-26T3000 for around £350 from Amazon (RRP £500+). This is a massively superior set for only £50 more. Has a better panel (higher contrast ratio etc.), better picture processing, and a load of other features the the U series doesn't have.

When mine was new they offered an 'S'; a 'V' and a 'W'. They use used the same LCD but the driver boards in the 'V' and 'W' were what made the difference.

The difference in cost between alright and best seems to be far greater now too; my set cost about £3,800 (the KDLW40, which included an integrated amplifier) new. Cheaper models in the range now cost a fraction of this, but the closest replacement model (for insurance purposes, 46" rather than 40" to make up for the lack of amplifier) still costs well over £2,500...
