If you're an employer or have a stake in the recruitment of new, school-leaver and graduate employees, please share your experience of candidates' literacy, numeracy and ability to communicate.
It may not be statistically significant, but it would be interesting to learn what's happening in the real world.
Thanks & have a good bank holiday.

People who work through college/school generally have an acceptable level of the skills mentioned, those that have dubious patchy work history tend to have issues with communication, numeracy and spelling. In a modern working environment, most of the time, being able to add up and spell can be overcome with technology. Being able to deal with people and having a good work ethic are more important. On occaision peoples lack of basic Maths/English/geography/History knowledge is unbelievable but rarely to the point that it effects their ability to work.

Its very much swings and roundabouts I think and depends what industry you are in I guess.
We tend to get the dregs here, and although some of our guys are intelligent, others are down right thick, and not through trying, just down to sheer laziness IME, mostly the under 25 y/o group I find.
Having said that, I have meet quite a few very well off older people (40 - 50 years old) who cant write or read very well, if at all.
I also think a lot of the problem stems from the toleration of poor behaviour and lack of effort. It seems to be accepted that people will do just the minimum these days, be it in school or at work. I have a couple of staff like this, give them a task to do and they will do it as slowly as possible and with as little effort as possible. They are in for a shock on the 29th when they get their notice.
The other issue I have with education is that too much time is spent on educating people in areas where they will never need the information rather than the basics. I think a lot of this is done in the work place too, its assumed people can do their jobs, when in fact a lot of people dont know how to do their job and just "wing it". On top of doing their job they have to go on courses on how to use a stapler etc which just adds to their confusion / lack of effort.
