The washing machine (a five year old Hotpoint Aquarius) washes and spins but stops when it gets to soft rinse. If I nudge the button it goes on to complete the cycle but fails to use the soft rinse.
Is this an easily fixable fault or should I pay a man to have a look bearing in mind that we're both pretty handy with a spanner? Or should I bin it and buy something that isn't a Hotpoint? I realise that these cheaper machines only seem to have a life expectancy of around five years![Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
I can't go on wearing crispy knickers so something has to be done ASAP

Assume you have thoroughly washed the draw(s) that hold the powder / liquid. By Thorough I mean taken them out and dismantled as far as possible and cleaned all the gunk away !
If yes - 5 years is a good innings and a new machine would probably be as cheap as getting a plumber out to it !

Sounds like the programme controller which either might have a bad connection somewhere or may need to be replaced. Worth checking if it is that which is cheaper to replace than the whole machine of course.

We have a stream that runs down the side of our garden, I've sent Sal out there, she's beating her knickers against rocks as I speak, no Tam, you can't have pics!

have you checked the filter ??? -- failing that, could be the soft rinse water valve has failed (machine sits waiting for it fill up, and nothing happens, by moving the timer **** a click u are overriding the setting, and machine carries on as normal)
