It IS a drug, and has been abused for years, most notably in generic cough remedies. At least one has been taken off the market because of it: Phensedyl.

It's VERY closely related to a hormone known as epiniphrine, aka adrenaline.

as above it is a drug, however its not illegal to posses, however it is illegal to sell in the uk. It can be bought from canada (allegedly) and has quite a few side effects. As alcazar says it used to be contained in various cough remedies, and athletes knew this so they bought it along with caffeine tablets and asprin to make an eca stack as it gave them a boost during training.

There are plenty of legal alternatives (for know) things like yohimbe (sp) and bitter orange have similar properties.

If you count two hydroxies and a methyl group as close, yes. They are both phenethylamines, but ephedrine is much more closely related to methylamphetamine (it's basically 2-hydroxymethylamphetamine). It's a mild stimulant, and like all such it acts as an appetite suppressant and slight metabolism booster. It also dries out mucous membranes (all of them) which is why it is used in cold cures etc.

IIRC this is one of the ingredients for cooking crystal meth. Cough medicines now use an alternative, one being pseudo ephedrine, as in sudofed

yer i used to take it for a bit, was proper good with weight lose, however it just made you really hyper all the time, and i couldnt sleep at all, and i smoked more. its basically like speed.

I used to use it (do do chesteze) For energy during weights. It gave me tons of energy but despite eating 4000+ calories a day I ended up losing weight. That and not being able to sleep made me quit taking it.

Most certainly is a drug. I use it every day on other people. Its mainly an indirect sympathomimetic (but does have a direct action also)
