Following on from J4CKO's thread, when did you first start using t'interweb?
I first went on it in 1998 using my dad's Windows 3.1 PC and dial up I remember wondering at the time what on earth the point of the internet was. I logged in to his home page (Lineone or something) after about a half hour wait and saw lots of garish flashing adverts and things that I didn't want to read.
About a year later I came back from RallyGB and did a search for 'rally'. It brought up a bulletin board - Rally365 - and I found a lot of like minded souls all talking about rallying so joined in. I made good friends with a chap on there who I'm still friends with now Anyway from that I did a search on 'Scoobies' and that brought me here
Now I can't live without the internet and can barely remember how we used to live before it

I think i was around the same time, although i was only 10
I diddn't quite understand it really, then i discovered msn messenger and my mates and I used to chat on that. Now if my internet has a temporary problem and doesn't work for half an hour i have a panic attack

Well, in around 1984 I had a modem and started calling bulletin boards and then a few months later used to run one. It then carried on from there really, hacking 'Janet' which allowed you to connect to various computers, then Compuserve and finally the internet proper.
Wow I'm old.

What were the old search engines in the 90s? Pre-Google. Have they disappeared or more likely been taken over? I can't remember now. And I don't thing viruses were a big problem then?

also a lot of people started out using portals like Yahoo! simply because it was easier.
We were all Netscape Navigator back in the day too.
I was working on a IT mag in 98 when one of the other reporters asked us all to try out this new Google thing with the I'm Feeling Lucky feature saying "this is brilliant, it'll be massive". The site said Google Beta on it at the time.

Ooooh, I was 16 I think and had just started college.
£2200 my mam paid for a big ol' computer system with an 18gb hard drive
Internt was courtesy of a 56k dial up model via NTL. Then in 2001 @ 17 we went the whole hog and got 512k dial up for about £30 a month

1995. My dad has always had his finger on the pulse, so to speak I was only about 12. Went onto chat rooms and ran up a nice wee bill - when he came home and caught me he went ballistic. I was barred from using it for a few years after that!

1998/99 using Autotrader.co.uk to search for a Granada 2.9 Cosworth saloon, I wanted to chop my R5 GTT for one!! Never did find one, they were circa £5k back then.
