MY SON PASSED HIS DRIVING TEST YESTERDAY!!! whoop whoop!
My 18 year old son Gary passed his driving test yesterday!! I am soooo Happy as I know how hard it was to pass mine!!!
Its an exciting day and im sure when you all passed your test's you were looking for a car asap!
He has spent all morning on the net looking for corsa's and clio's etc.... lol
I know he is now desperate to get on the road, but hubbie and i felt a nice little Ford KA would be a great starter car as the insurance is cheap and running cost etc...
Does anyone thoughts on this or advice on would car we should buy him!?
ONE happy mumma Tracy x

Well done that man
I got my daughter a KA when she passed. She loves it. I hate it!! For me the pedals are in the wrong place, you can't see the corners when you park and it feesl unsafe as it seems there is so little in the front to protect you. It's a late 90s something I think but rusting badly underneath. Bit of a girly car for a lad?
I got my boy a beaten up 205 turbo diesel. We both love it although it's getting a bit long in the tooth now (167k miles).
Both kids still live at home so I took the cheaper option of adding them to my insurance.
I'd go boring - Escort or Corsa? £1500 max.

Nice one, Tracy!
When my son passed his, I was desperate to know how he got on with his driving test. Anxious mother had to text the lad, he was taking his time! I got a short answer to "How did you get on???" as "Passed." Christ, The lad took it far too casual for my choice, to pass the golden test! I expected him to jump up and down with joy over it, but no! Anyway, I gave my son a Huyndai:sp: Accent coupe 1.4 for the first time. Now he drives a black Saab 2 ltr., and he is happy with it. Not that he doesn't drool over Corsas and Cleos, but the old man's image bearing Saab came to him as a pressie again (from his dad this time). So, he is very content with his free vehicle
Whatever you get, just get a small engine car for the first time young driver, as you already know.

GARY!!!!!!! is putting 25% of the money for the car and us the other 75% but we will be paying for the insurance for the 1st year and no doubt subsidising him money for fuel EVERY other day!!! (can hardly afford fuel for myself for the scoob thats why im always in the focus thses days!!)
But he is young and i know how important it is for him and to look cool infront of his mates etc..... he wanted my husbands road ligal quad bike as it would be cheap to run, but hubbie said NO WAY!!! and that he'd kill himself! 4 wheels and be safer!! if i had my way i'd put him in a tank that way he'd be safe ! lol
What ever he gets he'l be happy im sure!!!

I used to teach in a Corsa, and it was the most loathsome pile of $h!te I've ever had the misfortune to drive. I had a new one on loan recently and couldn't believe it was actually worse than the old one ! Ford's tend to be better driving cars with more focused chassis and handling. 205/6's are excellent for honing driving skills, but suffer from French build quality. These days I can't fault the budget VAG models from Seat and Skoda. I teach in a Fabia vRS which is awesome. Great for the learners and brilliant for me to drive too. I'll be chopping it in for a Mini Cooper D sometime though as they market themselves to the youngsters well.
Well done to the lad for passing, I know how hard it is these days.

See,when i passed my test,I paid the £300 for my first car,a 1977 Polo, and i paid the £600 a year TPFT insurance, made me appreciate the car,and let me build up the 10+ YNC i have now.
I know people who are still on their parents insurance at 22!!

I might have paid for the first car for my son (and, his dad did so too this year), but none of us ever paid his fuel and car running/repair costs. He didn't have enough money to pay for his first time insurance at 18, so his dad borrowed him the amount that he paid back quite quick. Almost every company suggested us and him to have his own insurance, rather than going on parents'. it makes it less risky for parents. So, mister always has had his own insurance.

Well done to your son
As for what car to get him, get him a cheap, clean car. Doesn't have to be sporty at all. In fact, if he wants to become a good driver, a slow car will be a good one.
Then in the future when he gets enough experience, he will learn how to make a slow car go fast. Then he can move up to a faster car and continue the process
My first car was a 1 litre citroen ax, slow, soft suspension, no grip, only 4 gears..... but I learnt to drive it properly, then took it to silverstone and surprised a few people with late braking and cornering skills.... Obviously they all raped me on the straights, even the 1.4 fiestas lol
Hopefully, whatever car you get your son, he will be happy

congrats! Passed my test only a few months ago and if it wasn't for me changing jobs at the start of the year i probably still wouldn't have learnt to drive yet!
I bought myself an Alfa 147 1.6twinspark. Tis great, i love it. Was gonna buy the usual clio or fiesta etc but i knew i would loath it. Next year i'll be getting myself an Alfa GT 1.9jtd and then maybe the year after a Impreza for weekends so in other words buy an alfa cus he'll stand out from the crowd

I had to buy myself my first car ... £350 for a D reg Fiesta.. lasted me 3 months and then failed on the MOT .. unsafe welds and moving brake pedal .... but I loved it ... in fact the very first day I took it out, it broke down ... my first "legal" alone drive too lol...
I then bought MYSELF a polo saloon 1.3 .. really quick compared to the fiesta and I paid £800 I think... wrote that off after about 6 months hitting a pavement in a Tesco car park .. my mum then got me a car through her disability allowence.. a brand new Clio !! she went and died and I had to give it back .. and the story continues...

I can't really offer any advice as to which car to buy your son, as I went and had 2 Impreza's after passing my test. Was a bit weird driving at 9.00am in a Mini Cooper, passing in that, and 1 hour later driving in a awd Scoobaru
Well done him though. I would personally suggest something like a 90's Golf or Polo, mainly for reliability and build quality.
