Default Advice please on will/death benefits?

My other half has had a father figure in her life since being a small girl, this guy has only had a very distant member of family that has been in contact once in a blue moon. So my girlfriend and her mum have been his "family" for years. He has said on many many times Jen is his "next of kin" etc. It is a well known fact that he wanted all of his possessions/money to go to her on his death. Unfortunately he passed away recently (The big C) This was his second time and both times both Jen and her mum have nursed him etc etc.

Now.. It looks like he hasn't done a will, or even nominated his pension death benefits to anyone. But has always refered to Jen as his next of kin to everyone he knows frieds of 20 years, all of his collegues etc

Will everything automatically go to hi long lost uncle, or Jen have any claim to it at all?

I'm hoping that this guy who has been in touch via email saying Jen was more family to him than he ever was etc, but when it come to inheritance people get very nasty and greedy.

We are not talking about huge amounts although still enough to make people forget their moral, about £50k in total.

Any advice/thoughts would be good people.

My guess is that it's very unlikely for Jen to get anything, Cooksie. If he had left anything of that sort in writing, she might have had a chance. Worth consulting a solicitor for a realistic advice on the matter, as Coolasice says.

I'm just hoping that he has made it official somewhere, all I know is he doesnt have a will, but may well have made a nomination for his work pension.
