Im using a Toshiba DVD player connected to a Sony LCD television. Theyre connected over a component cable and the player is configured to output a progressive image. When the appropriate AV channel is selected on the television it states 'AV4 576p': I was expecting 720p or 1080p, was I mistaken?

Your TV is upscaling all the data contained on the disc. The other option is to set the DVD player to upscale it if it can. The only difference is whether the scaler in the TV or the DVD is the best one. I would think it would be better to upscale the digital information prior the analogue conversion, as your TV will be re-digitising it for both scaling and replay. A cheap upscaling HDMI player would be the best solution though, read as digital, scaled as digital, transmitted as digital, replayed on screen as digital. Even upscaling HDMI players though can be set to output 576p, allowing the TV to scale it.

The television set is very good, the DVD player less so. There is no option to alter the output resolution, but 'upscale' means increase over 576, as opposed to simply providing a progressive signal over an interlaced one. Unfortunately the player doesnt have an HDMI port.
