Default Cat people

We're trying to buy a cat at the moment. God what a nightmare. I have never come across such a strange group of people as cat breeders. One had an answering machine message supposedly recorded by her cat. Nutters.

+1. There are plenty of homeless cats around already without encouraging people to breed more.

I have a friend who has a 'house cat'.Never goes out.Reminds me of one of those 'We are Siamese if you Ple-ease'

Our monster gets thrown out every night.Especially if the swine bites me.

But he's great.Fetches sticks like a dog and is normally heard scrapping violently outside the back door. (yep,he's a rescued Tom cat,now missing those bits)

I have a rescue cat, he was in the shelter for 3 years. He is an absolute beast, never met a cat like him in terms of companionship.

My other cat was a kitten off a notice board. Tortoise shell cats = nutters. She does forward rolls across the floor when you come home.

I agree, ours is from a rescue. The only cost was to get him neutered and his first set of jabs. Hes as daft as a brush, but he gives our westie a run for her money!!

+2 - we got our lunatic cat from the Cats Protection League - all innoculations and 'cuts' done prior to getting him.

Cat's make great pets. Ours is 16 years old now and is very friendly. I agree with others saying that you should have a rescue cat and not deal with breeders as it's good to give the rescue cats a chance.

Yes some "cat people" are weird but then you could say the same about some "dog people".

We picked up our 2 little ones (mum 18 months, baby 8 months) from Cats Protection last weekend. Neutered, jabbed, fleaed, wormed and chipped. Nice and simple, but then we know the manager.

Cat rescue. Unless it's a particular breed you were after, in which case there are also specific rescue places for some breeds.

Yep,they enjoy company as much as dogs.

And you don't have to clean up after them.

Love dogs and would love another one but they need time and we haven't got it sadly

We got our Siamese and Oriental from a breeder. She sends them both Christmas cards every year. Never bothers sending us one

Had a look at the local shelter, none really suitable for young children. I suppose I could look further afield. If it was down to me we'd get a dog.

Crikey, I know where there is a friendly bunch of strays for free. Many of which at one point had ancestors of pedigree backgrounds (siamese, blue shorthair, persian etc.).

Its where my last cat (Guinness) came from

Admittedly, it did mean loitering by a bunch of waste bins and skips to find one silly/fussy/freindly enough to approach you!

Another for cat rescue here. I love (and have had) both cats and dogs. We've had 3 cats from 2 different cat rescue places. All terrific and 1 is still with us (he's about 10 now).

Mongrels are best in either dogs or cats IMO - the pure bred things are freaks and riddled with genetic diseases - just my opinion

Best advice with cats is to make sure you get them whilst they're relatively young (if you're after a kitten) - cats that don't have exposure to people in the first 3 months will never get past that nervousness and are near-impossible to domesticate properly (we had a female that adored us and was great but would never go near visitors and got a bit stressed by them - we stupidly got her in January without realising that pet rescue places won't release kittens in the run up to Christmas - laudable but does mean the ones that are then released are generally nervous around people as a result).

It's important that you get one that greets you and is friendly from the off.

Our Tom is neutered and huge but very soft (puts up with toddlers treating him like a WWF opponent most days with nothing other than a fed up look and a twitching tail before removing himself from their clutches). Comes if you whistle, greets you all the time and knows most of our neighbours (no mean feat as they're spread up about half a mile along one edge of a country road).

Have fun!

Gordo

Most of our neighbours know our cat. Frankly they have no choice. Our immediate neighbour got half way to work and almost crashed when Mork (our ginger nutter) jumped onto the front passenger seat He'd climbed in when Tom had popped backed in to the house. He's been locked in the car a couple of times. The kids were taking photos before letting him out as we doing the cute thing

He's been fished out of the mini-bus our neighbour across from us owns more times than I care to remember (as does Steve, the owner ) He pops in next door and falls asleep on their dog.

I picked him 'cos he was instantly friendly (about 9 months old when we got him) and just flumped in my arms after having a play fight with me at the Cats Protection League

Thanks for that post.

I hadn't thought about that, do you think the Christmas factor will have kicked in already? No kittens listed in any of the local shelters. Maybe I'll pop in to have a look tomorrow.

If you want to re-home a pedigree cat, there are lots of clubs who will be able to put you in touch with people.

E.g. British Shorthair Kittens

If you look down the side there are a couple of re-home lists.

I can vouch that British Blues and shorthairs are gorgeous and have a great personality!

P.s. in our local paper last week there was an article about the local cat shelter having 26 kittens which need rehoming. Have to go in pairs though and no children under 5 in the house.
