M1 average speed cameras?

M1 average speed cameras?
Just been down the M1 through the average speed cameras...50mph limit. Cruise control on 50mph all the way.
Loads of cars/vans even lorries overtook me, some just crept past, some 70/80 mph and some must have been doing a ton easily (BMW's... bluetooth hanging out head).
Whats the score?
Do these cameras work?
Do you reckon they will get tickets?
Or do they know something?
I did read on here once that if you kept swapping lanes when you went through the cameras they couldn't do you.
Just curious.

those SPECS cameras I believe are not yet type approved if you change lanes between cameras. So you pass first camera in lane 1, then second in a lane 2, then back to lane 1 etc.
or....you get really close to the **** of the car in front before you go through a camera...
risky, but people do it, and get away with it

Your speedo won't be accurate though!
I drive through the 50mph specs with my cruise set at 60mph. My true speed will be nearer 55mph (as shown on my sat nav) and they're not going to do me at that speed.
I'm told if you average 60mph or more you WILL get done.

I've been done a couple of times here in Holland during the last couple of years. Usually early in the morning or late at night on the motorway on my way to or from the airport. In some places there are empty 3 late highways with 80kmh (50mph) stretches. Originally set up to improve traffic flow, but mysteriously became pollution measures when traffic flow worsened.
A little impatience is a bad thing and such times and typically costs 30 notes for 4-5mph over. No points here though.

Guys - at least there is (or may have been) a safety reason to do 50 in this section of motorway? Sit back, switch off, call a mate, eat an apple, and be a GOOD if somewhat unaware lowest common denominator citizen for a mile or two?
It may well safeguard a non existent roadworker? Although Fknows why I am joking about such a stupid way to treat drivers or lose their trust and respect... D

I recall recently doing a trip round the M25 at about 3 a.m. where first the overhead signs said 40, then 30, then eventually 20...
There was no other traffic in sight, none, not even any lights in the mirror. Trying to go at 20 on a completely empty motorway is utterly utterly tedious and almost impossible - I was thinking that somebody was having a joke in the control room... one car on the CCTV, I wonder how slow we can make him go ?

i always do 50 on the m1 specs zone......
like said above, there are reasons for the limit being imposed.
then i get to the "End of Specs" sat nav prompt, which translated into scoobyspeak means drop a couple of cogs and rip it !!!!!!

It was reported by the national press over a year ago I believe, along with the specific details of what the cameras had to see in order to issue a ticket.
I've not tried to avoid them, as sooner or later the type approval will be updated, and I may not know before its too late

i had visions of the motorway camera operator laughing his head as drivers crawled along at 20mph so i couldnt do it.
never got a ticket

SS, I think they are allowed 2 years to process speeding tickets for offenders on the M25

That does not matter. It is something to do with their type approval. If you land hop between each pair of cameras you can get away with it currently, which is what those people are doing.

'Search' on here as someone posted a link to an article which said that they were NOW type-approved for lane hoppers! You have been warned!

I usually go through at 60-70 and never have a problem. I also lane hop, hide behind trucks and do anything possible to avoid the tedium of driving at 50. On a my bike I like to try and see exactly how fast an avarage speed I can get which makes the worst part of the motorway in a car the most fun on a bike. You must remember with the lane hopping though that there are more sets of cameras than there are lanes to hop so sometimes its worth hiding behind a truck for a while.
