I want to buy my mum for christmas the tools/ products / subscriptions required to build our family history. I know it's something she's always wanted to do but I haven't a clue where to start.
Anyone been through the process and got any suggestions on what I could get her?
thanks in advance

I've been doing mine for about 17 years now. If you want a package for the computer, the Family Tree Maker is supposed to be excellent. It might be worth ringing this lot to see what they recommend;
S&N Genealogy Supplies - Software, UK Census and Data CDs
I don't actually use one of these, because I've never got around to sorting everything out and putting in in order
.........yet.
I would also suggest buying a subscription to a magazine. There are a few out there, but to be honest I've been really impressed with the 'Who Do You Think You Are?' Magazine (BBC publication). Another idea would be to enrol her with the family history society for the area she's interested in. I have an online subscription with Ancestry.co.uk but they are quite expensive if you're only just starting out. Genes Reunited are cheap, and you can post up your interests in there, and make up your tree. If you need any more info, pm me.
