Muslims and pork
Exposing dreadful ignorance on my behalf but does handling pork cause any problems for Muslims?
Was in the supermarket today with a nice Muslim girl on the till, unloads the groceries, go to the other end and the first four things through - pack of bacon, pack of pork chops, a smoked sausage and two gammon steaks (I like piggie meat me ).
Would this have caused any offence or religious issues for her?

On serious note, how do you know she was Pakistani? She could have been Hindu. Anyway, presuming she was Pakistani, did she serve you with a smile, or even with the sense of duty/professionalism? If yes, I wouldn't worry. I don't think she minded.

I got it from her being Muslim. Sorry, she could have been from some other Muslim country, you are right. And yes, I understand that if she was wearing a Hijab, then she must be Muslim.
However, if she served you with no hesitation, she must be ok about handling pork.

Think you'll find that 'most ' Muslims will eat pork ( and drink too, for that matter), just dont tell they're parents

The "mind boggling" thing for me is how can somebody take a job in a supermarket or shop that sells pork & alcohol and then demand not to handle them due to religious beliefs??
They shouldn't apply in the first place if they're that opposed to them IMHO

A guy who owned a cafe near a mosque was given an ASBO for serving bacon sandwitches, sausage buns etc.
The Cafe had actually been there for a long time before the mosque.
The owner of a private carpark was issued an ASBO for not correcting a "Parking" sign that had been sprayed by vandals to say "Porking".
A mosque that had a road side advertising board took legal action against the people they rented the advertising space to after it was used to advertise womens swimwear.

Being Muslim doesn't mean we are all extreme fundamentalists that declare Jihad at the firts sign of pork
Handling pork and eating it are two totall different things and if the girl did have a problem then she should seriously question her understanding and knowledge about what she follows
If people who practised their religion (Islam, Christianity, Judasim etc) actually followed the true teachings then we would all be living in a very happy world
Its the few who create the stereotype for many
Not all Muslims eat pork, not all Christians go to church, not all Jews honour the Sabath and not all Sikhs wear turbins.
It's like the story of the bloke down my street who bought a new 911 turbo and smashed it two weeks later into a wall after lossing it on gradual sweeping corner. His excuse; the brakes/handling let him down
So what caused the crash? Was it the handling ability of the car? or was it the ability of the guy driving it wth his lack of knowledge & experience in handling such a powerfull car
It would be ignorant to say the 911 is a crap handling car because a **** couldn't handle it, just as it would be stupid to say a religion or a type of people are bad because a few are total nut jobs
End of the day we all judge people based on our experiences, their apperance and our prior knowledge (lack of generally), its human nature to do so. And wondering whether the girl in question would find the handling of pork offensive is a very reasonable question
This is not a rant about anything said previously on this post, just fancied giving some input from a normal educated, successful Muslim lad. Doen't matter what you believe really (Muslim, Sikh, Hindu, Jew, Jedi, Warlock, Sith etc) we all have one thing in common...Subaru's

Thanks morpheus, realised I'd have to wait till the morning for a real response.
I was just wondering if there may have been some kind of penance like if your a catholic and have a hand shandy, you need to tell your priest.
If she's comfortable enough to take the job and do it with good grace then that's cool. I also wouldn't have wanted her to think that I was making a point by lining up those first, was just the way that they came out the trolley.
scoobynutz - there was a multi pack of frazzle type crisps in there later but as they're suitable for vegetations, not a problem I think!!
And I also agree with those making a point about taking jobs that put you in line to compromise your beliefs, it's like taking a job as a bouncer and then complaining when you get heckled by drunks!
Thanks all (well, most) for the input

Very surprised at this thread anyway. When we start wondering why a Muslim person can handle pork items at the checkout, then we must be getting brainwashed by the PC clowns!
You should just be thankful that you were not inconvenienced in the first place, and I wonder if all of the items you mentioned were wrapped anyway.

I don't know everything about every religion so made an effort to remove a bit of ignorance and misconception.
Maybe if everyone did the same, the world would be a better, more tolerant place.

It's ok, Hank What it is that I come from India. So, whenever we think of Muslim or Islam, we think Pakistan. Well, the first thought is that, I mean. Our most Muslim friends are from Pakistan. So, It's my fault, really. I should have read your post correctly, and thought on a broader level. I have been to West Africa, Middle East and Egypt where Islam is followed by masses. Which means that Islam is not just limited to Pakistan.
