Default My dog showed agression today for the first time !

For those that don't know I have a GSD .. Tara .. fluffy little thing

She's not shy but shes never shown any aggression towards anything until today ..

A puppy staff .. the owner asked me if Tara had a good recall, I said yes so he said would I might if he let his dog off to play with her and I call her back so his dog will follow .. I said yeah course.. his dog was lovely.. very submissive..

She was having none of it .. showing her teeth, snapping at it .. I have no idea why.. the fella apologised and said his dog must be winding mine up .. but I was a bit embarrassed.

She really does like other dogs and this dog was only playing with her.. running around and jumping about .. and then rolling on it backs when she came near it ..

Any thoughts on what could have caused her to take a dislike to this dog ?

Some dogs just don't get on with others dogs, No real reason for it it's just a fact of life.

My Boxer is fine with most dogs until she see's little white dogs then she wants to eat them for breakfast.

Most likely if the other dog was submissive your dog was either reinforcing their submissiveness or trying to goad it into more of a 'rough' play.

Our boxer can be a bit like that and a little more dominant if she feels the other dog is submissive. Different dogs express this in different ways - ours will use her paws (slap or right hook...) yours may do it by showing teeth...

I wouldn't worry too much if it was a bit of show rather than actually going for it. Although when ours has dones this I straight away tell her off if I think she's just being a bully.

Cool

Er, how about it's a dog?

They're still animals and untrustworthy, as my daughter found out last year, funnily enough to a dog that was supposedly ok round kids

Even seemingly mild people sometimes go odd, why so surprised when an animal does it?

Our dog doesn't like boxers or collies - all other dogs are fine.
She's very placid (2 year old black lab) and playful but if a dog is REALLY aggressive, she'll snap at them - so far every other dog has backed off each time so far.

LOL at "taste" comments!

If I was walking through the park with a friend and they suddenly started trying to punch a random person .. for no reason .. yeah I'd be surprised.

I have a Staffie, and every GSD that comes near him wants to have a go at him. And I mean every GSD.

I guess some breads just don't like each other. This has always been the way since he was a puppy. Now every GSD he see's he's ready for a fight. When he never even blinks at other dogs.

I never put a lead on him when out for a walk, as I know he A) does what I say, and B) would never go for anyone or any dog.

I only put the lead on him when we come near a GSD. I have to. Otherwise the GSD would go home with another @rse.

Ours takes offence at Architrave and Lino (Cusionfloor apparently), he was attacked last week by a young Dalmation, was ok first time we passed it, second time it sent him sprawling and went for his throat, the owner twatted his dog so hard it let go instantly, I didnt make a fuss as if you have a dog and let it off in a public park it might happen, Bob wasnt hurt, apart perhaps from his pride as I think without the surprise he would have murdered it being quite a bit bigger. I think the ownres reaction was the right one, agressive bloody thing and it suggested it wasnt the first thing.

Ours looks quite Wolfish and predatory when he does the Border Collie stalking thing.

Staffies tend to prefer people to other Dogs and can be iffy, my dads mate has one, a lovely girl called Stella and round our way all the "Red Setter Brigade" as he calls them make a point of dragging their trophy dogs away from Stella which p1sses him off as she doesnt bother with them.

All dogs have a breed scent, and they also have a scent memory, and if they have a bad experience with a particular breed of dog they will carry that throughout there life untill they have a positive experience with said breed.
It is reversable but as most things with dogs it just takes time and lots of patiance..

Only to be expected at some point. Unlikely that your dog, or any dog for that matter will get on with ALL other dogs. Has she come into season yet? Was the staf a dog or bitch ?

No.

He never goes for any dog apart from GSD. Why? Because every GSD he met when he was a puppy had a go at him. It's called fear. He think every GSD wants a fight with him.

I've had a couple of GSD's and they do not accept all dogs all the time, sometimes OK and then they get aggressive if they take a dislike to one.

I now put mine on a lead if other dogs are about, just not worth the risk.

Mine doesn't bother with other dogs unless they come over to her.. shes more interested in her ball.. most dogs have a sniff and maybe a run round with her and shes fine .. she barks when shes on the lead but I think thats more of a protection of me type thing .. She never been attacked or even had any aggression from a staff .. shes much bigger than it so I don't think she was intimidated .. she is by bigger dogs .. but even then she just puts her tail between her legs and stands still ..

Coming into season, other dog snarling (grumbling), other dog had food....?
Has she had her first season yet?

As for "mine does not bother" thats almost as bad as "shes ok" and now sadly not true either.

No food, had her season a few weeks ago, dog was rolling on its back ... and she doesn't bother .. in the 14 months I've had her shes never bothered .. she ignores other dogs. This dog came over to her and I called her over to meet it. All controlled. She was still more interested in her ball.
