Sorry for the long title! ![Big Grin](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
Had an interview on friday and I have received a letter today that was posted first class yesterday.
Mrs rang me up and asked if she could open it so I told her no, now the fact the letter is there and she has told me, is now pecking my head in, so I rang her back within 10 mins to ask her to open it and let me know what it says, but she has now gone out to do the shopping with the baby![Cry2](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/cry2.gif)

It depends entirely upon how many other candidates that there are and when they can be interviewed.
Truth is: the interviewers will know before leaving the room whether they want you back. Then it depends on if they meet someone they want more.
It also depends on whether the managers that make the decisions are in, and a host of other reasons.

I've had anything from being told during the interview that I have got the job and alternately I have also had times where I was told I was successful, up to two weeks later.
Really depends on the schedules of the interviewers/bosses, how busy it is and how many applicants there are. There really isn't a generic set time as far as I've found.

hmmm, I know I was the last person to be interviewed and they did say by the end of this week, just unsure if a letter being sent on monday is bad considering it was friday afternoon when I had the interview.
The people who interviewed me were the guy who looks after the contract itself (overseeing this particular job in all the prisons in England and Wales) so he is the top man, and also the HR woman who is responsible for this contract

I usually ask outright in the interview if I've got the job. It's worked a couple of times. If they say they still have people to see, I ask when I might hear back from them. If I don't hear by that date I call. I still call if unsuccessful to ask for feedback about what I could have done better.

Some companies will use 2nd class mail for those NOT getting the job but 1st for the winner. Some use 1st for most HR letters.
But you won't be told by 2nd class if you HAVE got the job.
If you see what I mean

As a regular interviewer, if you were exactly what I was looking for and you had no real competition, I'd let you know the same day. If I had 10 excellent candidates then it'd be a couple of weeks at least. If you were a no hoper then you'd know the same day too

Short answer: there is no definitive answer. Sometimes it takes a while for a decision to be reached.

Other times, the decision is more obvious and easily made!

I would have said the usual thing is for HR to make a phone call first to see if the person still wants the job - it is a 2-way exercise after all - to save writing offer letters that will not be taken up.
Fingers crossed for you anyway.

Lol i haven't had an interview for nearly 5 years. I'd better add it to the list of things to spruce back up on.
I'm the same as Olly though. Have a tendancy to ring companies up where I think I've had a good chance. Always ask for feedback, but usually it's a case of "better overall applicants applied" or "they're just out at the moment - will call you back..... beeeeeeeeeep"
Personally I think it's my "gammy" wrist and the HR team spot this in my C.V./covering letter (which are pretty good apparantly).

My last interview was about 15 years ago, it was done in 2 parts.
First stage interview was held a week before Xmas in a local hotel and it went well as far as was concerend.
2 weeks later, having assumed I'd failed, I get a letter offering me a second interview at head office which was a 300 mile round trip.
Drove to the interview, thought it went well, and then after I was told to see the girl on reception about my travelling expenses (wasn't aware I'd get paid expenses for the interview!).
Well they paid 50p per mile so I got a cheque for £150 just for attending the interview. I was happy at that as it only cost me 30 quid in petrol.
At 8:30pm that same night they rang to say I'd got the job
Best job I ever had

I heard the same day. Although it is a fairly small company (£10m annual turnover). My wife has just got a job as communications officer for the Police and she had her interview on Friday. They phoned to tell her yesterday.

I was phone screening someone today, and it was like getting blood out a stone....asked what he knew about us, and he couldn't say anything (and it's a company you could all have a good stab at!), and he wouldn't elaborate on anything - had to repeatedly prompt him. He also had a pile of stuff on his CV he "couldn't quite remember the details of". Needless to say, it lasted about 15 mins (should have been 5!).
Waste of both our times. Obviously wasn't too desperate for the £500/day he thought he was worth......
