I am driving to Estonia just before Christmas but to be honest Have no idea the best route. Seeing as it will be over 1000 miles I wanted to at least stop somewhere interesting on the way. One option is to drive to Hamburg and get a ferry from there but the problem is that Germany is the dullest place on earth, I did consider driving to Copenhagen the first day, spend a night there out on the lash then on to stockholm and the Ferry but wanted to check wether Copenhagen was actually worth a visit. The last option is a drive across Germany, across Poland across Latvia across Lithuania then to tallinn. This option seems painfull but at least I could stop and visit friends in Poland. It is however 1600 miles and if I take the Range Rover at an average of 14 mpg 99 pence per gallon would cost a pretty reasonable £114 in petrol.
The ferry from stockholm to Tallin is 300 euros on its own but does have the advantage of a nights sleep.
The main thing I am after is a chance to get more out of the trip than depressing dull milage so I am interested in what places cities and sights people have been to and enjoyed on the way.

Depending where you are in the UK I would get the overnight ferry from Harwich to Hamburg then decide from there it would be alot less stressfull than driving across boring Germany. Just don't plan on arriving on a sunday or you will be even less impressed as EVERYthing is closed except restaurants and petrol stations.

Never been to Aachen but not really enjoyed driving across Germany when I have done it before. I did once find some freaky twilight zone village called or near a place called Wildehousen where there were strange water 'devices' up and down the streets and about 50 cafes and restaurants all empty.
I am not sure there is a Harwich to Hamberg ferry anymore although there is a ferry to esberg and which is close enough.

Stick to civilised countries where you won't end up being constantly edgy about your own or your car's safety. So bollocks to the Southerly option via Germany/Poland/Lithuania/Latvia. I would opt for the Harwich/Esbjerg boat, cross Denmark (at least one internal ferry and when I went it was Winter and the ferry was cracking ice on its way over) and then Malmo to Stockholm and I would hope you can take another ferry from there across to Talinn. Should be a beautiful trip (if a bit costly) if you're prepared for the cold.

I am taking a ton of christmas presents some of which are fagile so flying is not an option. If I can find a cheap LHD then I will be taking that, dumping it there and flying back but it seems to be hard work to find a cheap left hooker at the moment. THey are all getting sold to Polish.
