I have just had a speeding ticket through the post, thing is I was in an articulated low loader doing 47 mph in a 50 mph zone. However, the speed limit for a HGV on this particular road is 40 mph.
Now before anyone jumps down my throat, I am not complaining, it was a fair cop, however, I wasn't aware that speed cameras differentiated between cars and HGV's![Confused](https://www.scoobynet.com/images/smilies/confused.gif)
Lesson learnt anyway !

Depends on the type of camera. If it was one of those new fancy electronic things, then it can cross check with a database, and they don't flash.

are you sure it was not a copper with a hand held / tripod mounted camera that took your pic?
The copper would see your HGV, and know the speed limit. Therefore he would point the camera at you and record your speed.
That is how I have heard it been done in the past. But, the newer cameras are bound to get smarter.

I think these are the cameras attached to the DVLA Database, it can instantly deduce what the vehicle is and take a picture if appropriate.
It knows if it has an MOT, is Insured, whether the Registered Keeper is wanted and even if the car is being hunted by Police it will contact the nearest available patrol car.
You've got to admire it!

Ave Speed Camera dumps all data for all vehicles to a table, in fact all it needs is VRM and Speed, then a vlookup against a DVLA database and filter the ones that are over the limit and print off the tickets...
I can do it with excel... I am sure they can!
As mentioned above, they (VOSA) do have "in motion" weigh bridges on certain roads, you drive over a loop and hey presto they know if you are over.

Some conventional GATSO devices are equipped with a pressure plate mounted in the carriageway. Smaller vehicles will probably get away with it, but the tare weight of a semi means that theyll always get you.

If you watched Police Interceptors, thay actually showed them connecting a scamera van with a CAT5 cable to download ALL the databases they had access to into the onboard system, they said they do it daily. Let's face it, you can buy 1TB drives for a laptop these days, so it's not a case of lack of disk space.
Just for example, at work we have a 58GB database which has room for over 121,000,000 records, so all the databases can't be that massive surely
