Education, Education, Education .....
England's pupils have been placed in the top 10 for science and maths in a global league table of achievement.
As a person involved in the Education of our children I think this is fantastic news!
BBC NEWS | Education | England's pupils in global top 10
The results put England's pupils ahead of other European countries, including industrial competitors such as Germany and the traditional education powerhouses of Scandinavia.
They also put England ahead of the United States and Australia on each of the assessments used by the researchers.
The highest score is for secondary science, where England's 14-year-olds are ranked fifth. In the three other categories, England was in seventh place.
This is a significant improvement on the last round of tests.

Strange how employers and higher education institutions claim that the most school leavers are innumerate and illiterate. I guess that if the tests are dumbed down enough then you can get the results you want.

OK I'll play the game. What do they need to be clever at to get ahead in the UK? Till skills? Customer service? How to serve folk burgers?
You tell me?
As a department we take on about 8 - 10 Skillseekers a year, perhaps one might make the grade, sometimes none do. And I can assure you, all they need to do to get a foot in the door is read and write, do basic maths and arithmetic and speak in sentences.
The graduates are not much better, but it makes HR feel a bit more assured when they finally have to offer them a real job.
Oh and our business is based down saff

I wonder on what all this is based on. How difficult are the exams that the children from other countries take compared with ours. We know that standards have been lowered here and it is now pretty easy to get to a university ,even if your english and maths is so poor that the new university students have to go on special course to raise them to a sufficiently good standard to actually start the degree course!
It comes to something when we find that new teachers over here are not very literate in so many cases too.

We then do a diagnostic test that tells us what academic level they're really working at. Rarely do the two match up......
Which leads me to conclude that the "intelligence" value of the GCSE is worthless, as they the students are trained to pass the exam.
