Portrait tattoo? PMSL! Otherwise known as "tattoo most likely to go utterly pear-shaped and be a source of cringing embarrassment to its owner until merciful death supervenes"?
There is one very good reason why tattooists are not out making money from doing portraits - they're not good enough artists, in general.

The best one I saw her do was a portrait of a small baby lying on the chest of her father (the tattoo looked like she was resting there)
It was a portrait of his daughter who died of a rare condition, she used to sleep there and it was his way of remembering her.
I think tattoo's like this done tastefully and by a very good artist are works of art.
...Im damned if i can find it on the net.

They CAN look good if done by the right person... the guy who did my little tattoo was actually a potrait artist before he 'turned' I've seen some of his tatt portraits and I must say they are extremely good. I would never have a portrait done personally
my brother in law had one done, in his home town of Bristol, of his young son.. and it looks absolutely nothing like the boy.. we've all had to say 'oh thats really good.. and then cough

I personally find Potrait tats tacky but thats just my opinion
I have a tatoo going down my whole forearm. Just my name in Old English lettering
People think thats stupid but it means something to me. (If i forget my name i will always have it there haha)
