Had a piece of jewellry especially commissioned and handmade - red gold and diamond broach - to a special design that is of significance to us.

Handed it to her whilst baby was away being weighed - so timing is important too.

Gucci watch for the first one, couldn't afford (and didn't have the time to shop for anything) when the other two arrived.

A school fund? Maybe a pension fund? The "norm", in my opinion...it's a "Well done!", and that's it!

Got mine Sky+.

She was a little surprised (though did accept that an eternity ring would be a bit strange given I've never bothered with any other kinds of ring!) but my logic was as follows:

(1. I wanted it anyway)
2. She'd find it awkward to ever watch TV again given the high chance of viewing disruption caused by a child. Pause and rewind essential in that case.
(3. I wanted it anyway)

She now accepts it is actually one of the best presents I've ever got her (there is a theme of never spoiling her emerging here) - though there was a slight wobble when she realised I'd got it free (threatened to cancel as the call centre wound me up so much) and now don't even pay the £10 a month.

Sorted

The following are all points worth noting when considering spending too much on this largely futile gesture:

- sex won't happen any more
- the spare room is your preferred option anyway now so being sent there as punishment is ok and to be encouraged
- she's not going anywhere - single mum's aren't an appealing proposition (especially as they're carrying too much weight and looking rubbish from lack of sleep)
- there will be lots of other pointless sh1te purchased, much of which will be presented as 'essential' (but isn't) and you've currently never heard of
