http://www.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/news/Criminals-wear-high-visibility-jackets/article-535750-detail/article.html
CRIMINALS ordered to carry out work instead of being sent to jail have taken to the streets of Derby in controversial high-visibility jackets for the first time.
The bright orange jackets, clearly branded with the words "Community Payback" on the back, were being worn by a group of three men and two women who were painting a social club in Mackworth yesterday.
The Government says clearly identifying criminals carrying out community service will show members of the public that justice is being done.
A spokesman for Derbyshire Probation Service said: "People can visibly see for themselves that we are carrying out work in their community and they can see the quality of that work."
But human rights organisation Liberty has labelled the jackets as "medieval justice" .
Shami Chakrabarti, director of the charity, said: "When someone has lost their self-respect and committed a crime, the last thing to do is degrade them further."
Now I'm all for punishing the guilty and making Law and Order visible, but I have to wonder at this. However, as a deterrent... it's hard to beat, unless you supply them with bright orange boiler suits of course.

Excellent news ... glad they have rolled it out - now get those single mothers back to work and we will start to redress the balance in this country!!
If you want money from the state you work for it.
If you commit crimes against the community, you wear a yellow jacket so all can see!! (or det an Infraction I assume?)

It makes them easier to spot and subsiquently hurl abuse at/punch/gob on as you walk/drive past which has to be bonus!
Yes, hig-vis all the way and it iit has communty whatever on, the more the better, scum should not go around committing crimes if they do not want to get punished and payback enforced on them, they have a choice to or not to the same as the rest of the law abiding public FFS!

If theyre given a fair choice, then I dont have an issue for it. If they dont want to be pilloried and remain relatively anonymous, then they have the option to complete their sentence in prison. They take this option because prison (with the exception of one private wing Ive heard of which actually lives up to all of your Daily Mail-reading fears) is far from easy.

Don't knock this woman. This country needs people like her to stand up to the government and campaign against state intrusiveness. ID cards anyone? Cameras to check you're using the right dustbin?
IMHO giving them yellow vests is a bit OTT.
I had to semi-supervise a bunch of these people who were told to paint a charity building which I had cleared out. What a hopeless lot! Out of about a dozen 2 or 3 got on with the job and the rest just buggered about doing the minimum. 1 or them spent most of the time shaking and in tears, drug withdrawal? Their official supervisors were pretty useless. dl

The day will never come, when people who live in Northampton can look down on Derby!
The crims had a choice. They elected to take thi spunishment in order to avoid a prison sentence and being identified as wrong-doers was part of the punishment, which was factored in to the overall tarif. The crims human rights are not affected because they can elect to take the conventional punishment and go to prison. Take away the element of shame and the punishment would be an easy way of avoiding a prison sentence and be of no worth.

It gets my vote.
I'd also like to see a weekly / monthly newspaper with photos of locally convicted crims and their crimes detailed.
They do the Hi-Viz thing AND the newspaper in the States. It doesn't seem to reduce crime to zero but it does make for tidy streets and interesting reading.

i dont think they should be given a choice. I think they should be made to do it. Sod their liberty - they are criminals and as such forfeited any human rights or liberty when they comitted the crime.

I'd prefer it if they were locked up in a prison somewhere rather than being allowed to roam the streets because this "tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime" government haven't bothered to build any more prisons.

'Sod their liberty' opinions are foolish. What protects them also protects you. Threads like this always seem to lack a deal of thinking.
