Come on Pete they are hardly going to be quality bulbs are they? Not all bulbs are created equal. You or your family's lives could depend on seeing and being seen.
Dont do it.

I have never noticed any light increase with those bulbs anyway!

Me neither.

But swapping the original 55watt/60watt bulbs for 90watt/130watts made a nice difference though.

Actually you've just present a compelling argument as to why he should use those bulbs

Actually thinking about it;

If the headlamp bulbs are old. Halogen bulbs do get dimmer with age (they start to go more yellow, dimmer and the glass gets a black coating reducing the light output).

So just by replacing with a standard bulb could make an improvement.

(oh dear lord, I hope this doesn't get read into too much; "they" will start changing light bulbs at every service like they do with super duper oil, MAFs, prefilling filters and priming every 3months )

Not sure what make they are.

Ali-B ..... if 'they' do read your comments you have now condemmed them to a life of 6 month bulb changing schedules

But at £1 they shouldn't suffer too much ..... but, hold on, they are the same ones who pay £60 for oil - maybe they will buy regular priced bulbs?

I will have to produce a procedure for changing the bulb, it cannot be simply "Take old one out, put new one in" can it? This is a Subaru Impreza, the most complicated machine known to man and needing very special procedures to work properly.

Renew your MAF every 6 months? ...... I have yet to renew mine in 8 1/2 years and 91,000 miles
