I guess the surprise is that the shops were bleeting that they couldn't sell anything!

I'm old enough to recognise the usual News events in the approach to Xmas ... shops worried over no customers, Xmas tree shortage, Brussel Sprouts to cost 500% more, Santa isn't real .... all the usual bulls**t!

It's taken huge sales to get us back into the shops spending money though. Will be interesting to see what happens after Christmas.

You're right. I saw a comment from Matteeboy earlier who said it's really bad having all these sales before Xmas. Surely it's been that way for the last 4-5 years at least. Remember when M&S had their "first" sale, that was during the boom.

Pete is right. the measures taken by our world class ruler have not only saved the banking system but the economy as well.

We should all be grateful, and especially grateful to Pete for taking some time out to relay the good news.

hardly a surprise rise in sales though is it? i mean to be fair everyone's chopped their prices, so its obvious us bleating shopper-sheeps will go and buy stuff!!! and being that its christmas helps too, whenever else does the general public go out and buy stuff no-one wants!!!

Even better, the £ has slumped to less than a € if you exchange at Heathrow Airport.

Fookin ell, the man isnt allowed to say anything, cut him some slack, it was a positive statement.

<silly mode.>. The most enjoyable moment in any action film occurs when the villain is hoist with his own petard.<./silly mode.>

The british retail consortium are saying the ONS figures released today "do not reflect what retailers are seeing".
Makes you wonder if this is another government attempt to spin figures, like they did with the knife crime figures last week.

In the main it will be fire sale time, clearing out purchased stock to release some capital. Turnover may be ok but profit margins will probably be marginal at best.

Be prepared for it all to go south in the new year

Its Christmas, and the recession has not bit yet, prices will be going up and up, so you might as well buy now while you still can.

Errr so that's why they're forecasting that we might actually end up in a situation where deflation is occurring

Do you have any hard facts to suggest that prices will be going up or are you just spouting drivel like normal

Don't buy now, wait six months it will be cheaper then

The weakness of the pound will drive prices up, especially since we no longer have a big manufacturing base. I have already seen prices increasing on imported goods.

If we all start spending the interest rate may not drop any lower.

I was hoping it would hit 0% by say March 09? It would make my mortgage .99% but that aside I would like to see if it could ever happen.

We managed as a country during the World Wars, whilst getting bombed, I am sure it was horrific but most people will just adapt, we have all got lazy, fat, comfortable and complacent, like well fed Lap Dogs, just been to Ikea, should see some of the massive retarded waddling f*cktards mooching around shouting at their idiot offspring, maybe some shortages would quell the obesity epidemic, the woman I saw had a good five years of spare flesh to burn through before she ran out.

The shops are generally full of sh1te we dont need, we need food, thoiugh not as fancy or in the quantities we buy, we waste too much and eat too much, me included. Tellies, Stereo's, Ipods, Laptops dont matter, as a species we lived without for thousands of years, ditto cosmetics, nobody will die due to Clarins withdrawal or Garnier Fructis shortages.

As long as the food keeps coming and is affordable, the water supply is intact and so is the power we should be ok, even then if the electric goes off most people will be ok, the gas goes off, wear a coat and make a fire. As long as the hospitals keep going and most public services, i.e. like bins being emptied.

What will be a problem is if mass civil disobedience occurs, as every time it happens its usually to get a new telly, I think as long as people are fed it will be ok.

I cant seeing anything getting that bad, depends how well people can cope not being able to get a Range Rover Sport.
