Default I learned a new word today but I'm never going to be able to use it in conversation.

Perfectly real word, means:
an excessively parsimonious, miserly, or stingy person.
A stingy, grasping person; a miser.
a selfish person who is unwilling to give or spend

So can you imagine after a meal with friends, you're doing the bill and the tight one pipes up...
"Ah but I only had one drink and then it was soft drinks and I only had two duck pancakes and everyone else had three and I had boiled rice" etc etc etc

And then you chip in with - "Jeez Pete, you're such a niggard"

Not going to go down well at all I don't think.

Definition at Dictionary.com

So what pointless thing to have in my brain, taking up space that could be used for something else.

Amusing that you used the name 'pete' for your imaginary niggard.

Most apposite....

So if you were being really stingy with the logs for your log-burning stove, would you be a niggard in the woodpile?

Adjectival form - niggardly - is more common.
Has been somewhat put out of commision by overzealous PC brigade unfortunately.
