Amazingly wife bought me a Garmin Edge 605 for Christmas which I'd never really thought about before but is an awesome cool bit of kit. Downside is that I need to now go and buy the mapping component but that's not a hardship.
Anyway, she wasn't sure if that would be the best thing for the job and I've kept the packaging etc intact. Is there anything else on the market that does a better job for a simillar price? Aparently the maps aren't the best & from what I've seen on the internet demo, that might certainly seem the case.
What recommendations etc?

Either...
View Ranger for Windows or Symbian smartphones
Satmap Active 10
One of the guys I ride with has shelled out on the Active 10 and it's a very nice piece of kit. Outdoors Magic reviewed it and seemed impressed.
Must get round to checking out View Ranger on my E66 - in fact, it will give me something to do today

The Edge isn't much of a navigation tool more of a training tool. I use a Forerunner and combined with Memory Map it's pretty good. It depends what you want it to do. I set out my routes prior to leaving and then like to review the stats when I return. Alternatively if I go off exploring I'll review the route and add any interesting bits to my mapped out rides.

Sent the Edge back & got a Satmap Active 10 - it is awesome! No comparison on the Garmin & using OS maps as standard. Will take it out for a test ride tomorrow, can't wait
