Speed Limiting Devices

They have been talking about this for years, its not new and just seems to have resurfaced again. The clip in the video is a mk1 fabia with the system fitted and this was demonstrated nearly 5 years ago IIRC. The video clip dates back to this news item in 2003.

Ah, but the next phase involves a big waggly finger mounted on the dash, and a synthesised nanny voice that tells you to change to a more environmentally considerate gear. Since getting all the speed limits into a database that will be lost on the train the very next week will cost a lot of money they will then decide to have a blanket 20 mph limit everywhere...

I can see a market appearing for cheap GPS jammers....

surely this would have a huge knock on effect to the economy. For instance, if all cars were resricted to the speed limit only, then nobody (or significantly less people) would want to buy prestige/sports/performance cars, so companies that make these cars will make less of them which will put people jobs at risk, tuning and modified car parts companies will go out of business etc etc etc

thin end of the wedge. once the database is complete they will start to promote the voluntary use of the devices.
Then show with spinned figures how amazing they are....which in turn will lead to tax incentives to have them fitted to your car....with eventual tax disincentives if you don't. Before finally making it compulsive to have one.
Jammers won't work either......as once they are compulsory if your car falls off the net you will get a fine.

The only limiting I think they should do is stop cars doing over 100mph on roads afterall there isn't any point going faster than that under normal driving circumstances plus traffic really dont allow it, the track is a different matter

Sounds dangerous to me. Worse still than speed camera's which obviously take our attention away from the road and onto the dash, as I fear a lot of us and myself absolutely included would just turn our brains off and stop paying attention to the road.
What about the extraordinary circumstances like trying to get someone to hospital, or evading terrorists ...in and outside of shopping centres

Hey, here's a revolutionary idea! Why not make the driving test longer and more relevant to modern driving, including motorway driving and how to control a car in an emergency or poor weather conditions. Then force a retest every 10 years. Apply it to all new drivers and everyone who loses their licence.
Eventually, you have higher driving standards and you've created jobs.

I never thought about what would happen on a track. I don't fancy going round Knockhill at 60!
I totally agree. I know far too many people (females especially) who seemed to fluke it on the day and don't actually have a clue how to drive properly.
Saying that my mum is possibly the worst driver I have ever seen. No concept of space, drives at 30 everywhere, refuses to drive on the motorway and I've never ever seen her look in the mirror... for road purposes anyway

That doesn't sound like NuLabour at all.
I love the fact they claim it will decrease accidents by 29%. Just which ****-sucking civil servant scum bag sat and devised that figure? As every car enthusiast knows, even the governments OWN figures don't say speed is the primary cause for accidents. (IIRC its 3% of the accidents that are cars flying off the road for driving too fast)

"cars will safely reduce speed" - from that video, it looked as if the car broke harshly down to the speed limit, with no idea if somone was travelling closely behind it.
as john connor said, i think i need to live off the grid.

this is just the trial to soften up the public before it becomes compulsory - see EU regulation EU 2004/52 http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/...24:0143:EN:PDF which is to do with electronic toll charging it initially appears, but in reality lays the groundwork for speed limiting by GPS. This has ALREADY been passed and is due to be implemented using the white elephant Galileo satellite system

I read this limiter will help to reduce Co2 emmissions by around 6% a year.
If the government are so concerned about Co2 why don't they stop their plans to increase the size of Heathrow and Stansted airports, expanding them will increase Co2 by 20%. Sorry I forgot, the motorist is the cash cow of this government
