coal & wood ash as a fertiliser

Afternoon,
Can't seem to find an answer for this. Does anyone know if it's ok to put the ash from a fire, i.e. coal/logs, on to the veggie patch? Wondered whether it would make a good fertiliser or damage the delicate ph level of the soil.

we put ours on the garden throughout winter, you just have to make sure its cold otherwise you'll end up with patches of brown grass, like we have on our front lawn!!
