This is a question I wondered as for the 4th advert break in succession I saw their cynical heart wretching advert (using actors of course)
Seems, no one actually knows how they spend their money. A Google search reveals they "could of done more" with regards to Victoria Climbie. And presumably in due course they will say the same about that other child.
Maybe I'm missing something, but they list various forms of Child abuse. But I cannot remember them saying they actually saved anyone from abuse. Well apart from that business on the shetland islands in the early 80s. (for those with shorter memories, several children were removed from their families by the NSPCC with no actual evidence of wrong doing. The NSPCC never apologised)
Also here are some of the things the NSPCC regards as abuse. (Paraphrased) Good idea to make everything involved in parenting abuse that way you can raise more money.
"Making a child walk to school in inclement weather"
"Feeding a child an unhealthy diet - junk food"
"Smacking a naughty child" - in fact punishment in total it seems
"Talking to a child in a derogatory way"
Grumpy Old Sod.com - Where did the NSPCC go wrong? Well ... here, actually!
More recently they have included "leaving a child with a teenager" (sounds awfuly like next doors teen earning a few quid as a babysitter) or letting a child cry rather than bend to their demand.

I think the next advert campagin should be a small child with the tag line. "Pay up or the kid gets it" Would certainly save a percentage of their annual £150M they get. But even they agree they spend less than 50% of that on "actual work" (I don't know either) you have to wonder where the rests going.
As ever, if you have some counter proof of their sterling work, post it up.
The only tangible benefit I've found on a quick Google is they train Social workers (not so well it seems!) and run a competitor to the Childline phone service.

I think they mainly advertise on TV.
I guess the other thing they can do is "lobby" for changhes in law and so on.
Since social services are run (well?) by the state, there is probably not much else they can do.

We're going OT. But I laughed at that one. You think the farmers went to all that aggro of domesticating the Donkey to use as a tool. Then pay for its feed and medical upkeep, just to let it rot at the side of the road. The donkey is these guys livelihood. They just don't risk it that way! I'm waiting for "Donate £3 to save this Pigs life. "Oinky" was raised for food, but you can help set him free"
