Default What do you call an acceptable 0 - 60 time?

We're not talking supercars or impreza's here, just your average car.

I've been looking at a forester X as the next car as the sports about to cost me a serious service bill. Problem is the foresters 0 - 60 is listed as 11.4 seconds.

Part of my daily commute is from a B road straight onto the A1M with a 70yrd sliproad, so thats on average 10mph - 55 as quick as possile. So I see 11+ as to slow and bordering on the dangerous.

What are your thoughts.

Has to be sub 10 for me, I had a Passat diesel hire car for a while and I found it ponderous (12 secs).
Sub 7 for a fun car.
I'm not a fan of high speed but I like getting to a decent speed quickly so 0-30, 0-60 are important factors for me.

Petrol I like to say 8.5 to 9.5 sec 0-60 is my personal minimal; any slower and it gets annoying.

Diesel; around 10 to 11 sec 0-60. The greater torque allowiing to use taller gears; So better in gear times and no time lost messing about changing gears. So 30-50mph is usually alot better than a petrol that is faster 0-60.

The wife's 120bhp forester has no trouble keeping up with/overtaking traffic, and never feels dangerously slow. 0-60 times are only part of the story.

Our (now sold) Fabia vRS was something poor like 9.6 but it didn't reflect at all on the cars performance which was really rather good.

0-60 doesn't mean much to me,just has it got oomph when you need it

I'm in the sub 10 seconds club. Anything in double digits gets immediately ignored. I wouldn't say anything over that is dangerous, its just personal preferences.

Course in 5 years we'll all be limited to 15seconds anyway

I am a sub 10 second person normally but 0 - 30 times are most critical for me as I like the pull off fast accross islands etc, so even though the Santa fe is over 10 secs the diesel torque gets it to 30 pretty sharpish.

I have always thought 0-30 was the most important as this is the mostly driven speeds especially in cities and areas where there are alot of stop start / giveway junctions etc as hopefull roads of faster requirement at least allow an area to get up to speed .

I go around in my wife's Picasso and it is okay for normal driving and that has a 0-60mph time measured in the changing of the seasons. I would say somewhere around 9-10 would be okay.

I rarely use the potential of my (6.5 second) Focus, but perhaps I'm just getting old.

Depends on the car, 0-60 is a waste of time as a yardstick anyway as most cant repeat those times and it gives no indication of an engined flexibility, ok, a CTR might do it in 7 seconds but it is peaky pain in the ****, though fun if you are in that kind of mood, a Diesel Golf might take 8 seconds but would be much more flexible and probably as quick in real world situations, i.e. ones where you get caught napping and need some instant go.

My Saab as standard does it in 7.0, its remapped, I dont think its made the 0-60 any quicker as that is traction limited in the most part but I do notice the extra power elsewhere, unfortunately so has the clutch

It's a '98 GLS manual. The missus gets between 30-35mpg but I get about 27/28, all of which is on twisty turny lanes
It can be hustled along, but you have to stir it, which I do!

The book says I can do sub 5 to 60 in mine but that really is no use anywhere except a drag strip. However, I've just taken it out into regional WA for a few days and, as stated elsewhere, mid range is where it's at. Being able to get around road trains, "weekend gypsies" (no offense) or slow-*** drivers quickly and safely, in 4th (3rd wasn't necessary) is very satisfying.

So, to the OP, sub 10 would be good but maybe it's all about, as Clarkson might say, "torques".

I think less than 8 seconds. I'm around 6.5s with the S2000 but don't feel the need for anything faster to 60, I'm having enough trouble getting the power down in these conditions at the moment so hate to think what it would be like in anything quicker. Had a 406 1.9d before, terribly slow to 60... crap for overtaking!

I feel a good 30-70+ is more important though, the S2000 does this job nicely in the right gears.

Yes 8 seconds is the cut off for me. Of course, you can easily adjust to less than that - especially if it's the 'family' car.

My car books at about nine seconds, but that was conservative, with the actual cars being tested at eight. Thats fast enough for me, although the car weighs 200 kilogrammes less than when it was built, which makes it a good deal quicker (eqv. to 40bhp according to popular opinion). As it is, it struggles to maintain traction in anything but dry conditions, although that may be because so much weight has been removed from the rear.

I used to think a vehicle was slow unless it was sub 10secs 0-60 time.

But I feel my daily driver is quick around town and even better on motorways, yet officially its 0-60mph time is 11.2 secs.
I put it down to it being a diesel, and find 172bhp and 300lbft torque is plenty of power in real world conditions. I don't need to rev the @rse off of it as max torque is available from just 2000rpm.
70mph in 6th gear is a nice cruise but plant your right foot (leaving it in 6th) and your soon doing speeds that would get you banned.

It's totally different to what my scoob used to do, but is a lot more fun!

Skoda quoted 9.4 or so, but every mag that ever properly tested them always got mid 8's, maybe as VAG didn't want the humble Skoda to be too close to the VW and Seat sporty models Mid-range is astounding in them, especially when mapped. I timed mine recently with a Racelogic Driftbox and managed 30-70 in 6.1s I miss the 'off-the-line' grunt of my Scoob, but I'd say the Furby isn't far off a standard WRX once rolling and below 90. Anywhere that AWD gives an advantage though and it'd kill me Well, until they pull in for fuel and I rattle by getting 60mpg

for me 10 secs or less.

I think most important is 40 - 60 times for those vital over taking movements.

TBH mate after driving a turbo forester, the non-turbo feels like its powered by coal! I had one as a loaner when my forester was being fixed after an accident and couldnt wait to give it back. Nothing wrong with it, just a little uninspiring.

Used to be sub 9 seconds for me, but talking 10 - 12 years ago. Not many run of the mill cars would do it in less than 9 secs back then.

Now, I would say sub 7 as a min.

My cars currently do 0-60 mph in:

3.5 (approx I just hold on!)
3.9 (as reported by Evo with timing gear verification)
10.9 (oh dear!)

They are all 2 seaters even the 10.9, well the one that does it in 3.9 has back seats but no grown adult would fit, that said I have had a couple of slim ladies in there.....
