Default How long to charge a car battery from completely flat?

I have had one on charge now for a good 5/6 hours, and it's still showing charging..

Is this normal, or does it look like a fooked battery?

If the battery is completely discharged and the charger only manages 4-8amps then itll take a lot longer than six hours to charge! It wouldnt be surprising to hear that the charger kept overheating and turning off for the first two or three hours, or maybe more..... Leave it over night: if it isnt low on electrolyte then itll probably be alright as long as it hasnt sulficated leaving one or more of the plates touching...

That's good to hear, the charger has been hot(ish), but not turned itself off that I know about. Fingers crossed it will be OK, I'll leave it on till 6am then give it a try in the car.

What Mick means is: that one or more pairs of lead plates may have sulficated and shorted together. Where this happens the cell will be dead, losing a nominal 2v. per cell.

Unless you have a very good high ampergae charger I wouldnt be too worried yet though. If the battery was left completely discharged for long then therell be a risk though: increasing exponentially with the time left flat.

5-6 hours is not enough to charge a battery completely from flat. I should leave it on for 24 hours, it may well still show a small charge even after that but if the battery is serviceable it will have enough of a charge to be usable.

Every cloud has a silver lining.....If the battery wont charge, you wont have to drive around in a Laguna.

If I ever have a flat battery, I always leave it on a trickle charge until the battery indicator shows it is fully charged.

I have always been of the opinion that it is best to trickle charge a normal car battery.

I have an Accumate charger, and it takes about 36 hours to take the battery on my car from completely flat to indicating a full charge.
